Is there such a thing as having too many mentors?

Contributor: lilly555 lilly555
I love the mentor program, even though I've had several already and feel fairly confident in my reviews I still like the idea of asking for another mentor in the future. So I ask is there such a thing as one reviewer having too many mentors? Is it selfish of them to request a mentor when they don't need it as much as a brand new reviewer who may need more help?

I have had four myself, each one teaches you something and there is always room for improvement. I do not think there is a such thing as too many mentors. Everyone has something to learn from.

Every mentor has their own style of writing and using the site. A reviewer can learn many things from each mentor. I believe that if you feel like you want or need improvement in a certain area or in general, you should request a mentor who specializes in what you are looking to improve.

I can see why a person would want to work with multiple mentors but remember that the gift cards are definitely one of the main draws for people who are mentors and it's frustrating to only get a couple points in return for helping you out.

Perhaps I've also only had students who weren't.. communicative but I get the most out of helping someone who can really use it.

I voted for the 2nd option because I'm not sure. If you really don't need the extra mentors and you request them then it could be taking away from someone else who does need it. As long as you think you can benefit from the extra mentors then I think it's awesome that you want to learn so much!

So I say it should be fine unless you truly can't learn anything from them and you still request them. I can see how having a little variety would be helpful though!

I don't think there's a problem with it. I've had two mentors, and they were both great and super helpful. I did focus on different types of products with each one and I think I really benefited from having both of them.

I've only had one Mentor and I almost feel like I would be stepping on her toes were I to get another one in the future.

I'm not closing off avenues, but just showing how new I am to all this.

If it gets to the point where basic reviewers can't find mentors because advanced reviewers are using up all the class slots, then it would probably need to be addressed, but I don't believe that's the case. And since it's up to every mentor to accept or reject any potential student, they can always decline to take on someone if they'd rather focus on basic reviewers.

OK, just a quick question that I thought one of you may be able to answer...

Can you request 2 mentors at one time? I had this question asked today and I am curious. I know you can have multiple, but can you have 2 at one time?

Say the mentor isn't... compatible with what you need or someting happens and you would like to have another who can help at the same time? Do you have to cancel first or what?

You can message and talk with other mentors at the same time, but you can only be in one class at one time. You could finish the class with the one and move on to the other, or message the other while in the class with one, but you can't be in a class with both at the same time.

Oh, OK I see. Someone had said they had 2 mentors at once so I thought it was. So the multiple mentor thing is only after you've finished with one, you move on to the next. OK. Thanks for clearing that up

As long as you feel that there's room for improvement, I don't see why it should be a problem.

I've had 3. One to show me the ropes, one to help me write about bondage items b /c I was new to light bondage, and I have one now to help me with lingerie reviews. IF my husband ever allows me to get dildo's then I'll need a mentor for that as well b/c I know nothing about dildo's.

I think it's great that as advanced reviewers we can still have mentors. I know when I moved into lingerie reviews, I asked Sam to mentor me.

Now that I'm moving into dildo reviews, I've asked Kindred to mentor me.

I also had a mentor before I became an advanced reviewer too.

I think it's funny sorta that with a 7.7 rank and as a mentor myself, I have a mentor - but I also know that I really need one and appreciate the ability to have one.

The Mentor Program, as I see it, is to assist with improving review writing whether it be style or content, whether your new or advanced. I think that too many people only view it as a means to becoming advanced but that is only one of the benefits of the program. It's also a great way to meet and interact with other members of the community. For me, I also learn from my students so it's a two way street.

Every mentor has a different style, so there's no harm in having a few mentors to help yourself improve. There's always room for improvement.

That's a good point, right now I'm writing lingerie reviews which I'm pretty confident in but my sensual/bath/body writing needs work. I think my next mentor will have those items as a specialty.
