Has anyone else here had a student that comes across as rude?
What did you do about it if you did?

What can you do about it?

I have never had a student that has come across as rude, luckily.

I think if it did happen I would try to verify with the student if my perception is correct, which will give the student an opportunity to either validate or correct himself/herself.

I would be honest and tell them, "Your past message came across as rude to me, I found 'x' offensive. Did you mean 'y' or 'z' when you said 'x'?" Something to just let the student know how I understood the message and try too be cool about it.

I come across as rude every now and then, and I really appreciate getting a second chance!

We had one who was very obviously being rude on purpose, and Alan & I both just sort of blew it off and resorted to speaking to him in a professional/factual manner. We try to be casual and friendly with most people, students or not, but if they aren't receptive then we treat the situation like we would if we encountered a difficult customer at work. That is unless they get abusive. If that's the case then Alan & I differ in our methods: I would do my best to get rid of them and avoid them from then on, but Alan would be inclined to tell them to piss off .

It's tricky to tell what tone of voice someone is using when it's over the internet. Annoying but true.

Good topic! I was hoping this would get brought up in the community!

That is true, it is hard without hearing someones tone but when you're a mentor and you're met with a lot of ??????????? and I mean multiples all at once, it gets to the point where you are like "seriously? " I mean to me one question mark asks a question, multiples is acting baffled by what the other person is saying and when it's something as simple as " are you happy for me to publish your review now?" It's sorta like they are taking the piss really.

Very good suggestion. Luckily when I did the student told me that they are just not used to common courtesy and good manners, the student actually said that. I said that I was unsure why they didn't understand what I was saying to them and that it was just me trying to be nice and it's just common courtesy and they responded with "Oh, I'm not used to that"

It made me LOL and kinda sad all at once.

It's always really hard to tell online if someone is being rude, because all you see is text - you don't hear voice, or see facial expressions. I blow it off and keep speaking professionally, as a teacher would. Think back to school days and what not.

I've had students that I'll accept for class that haven't written any reviews at all and the first thing they say is "when can I start getting my free stuff?"

I tell them that they need to at least write one non-assigned review before I request and assignment for them. Next thing I know, they cancel the class and have a new mentor. >_<

Other than things like that, my students have been pretty cool to me.

Wow, that sucks! If you're in it for freebies, you're in it for the wrong reasons.
