Can Writing So So Reviews Hurt Your Rank

Contributor: David88 David88
So there are a lot of toys that I have but haven't reviewed. My question is this. If I don't find them as great as my other toys I find I don't write as long or as good of a review as the toys I do like. So my question is if I did write a review about one of these toys and people don't find it as useful and rank it as such. Will that hurt my ranking?

It won't *hurt* you ranking per say, but it won't help it as much as an extremely uesful review would. You still get the bonus of having published a review which is a large portion of your ranking and how "useful" the review is is also a small portion of your ranking, so having a review rated less useful, while it won't hurt your ranking, isn't *as* useful as extremely useful. But it still helps your ranking.

That having been said, what you actually *rate* the toy has nothing to do with your ranking. It's the quality of your review and what other rate it in terms of usefulness does.

Gotcha, no I wasn't referring to the rating I give the toy but what others review as the quality of my review. So I guess what your saying is that the percentage of your score that is based off of your review ratings isn't averaged over all of your reviews. That's good to know thanks. Obviously I'm still going to try and write as best I can but some things I just don't have as much to say about.

Writing reviews makes up 28% of your rank. The usefulness voting makes up 34%.

So, yes, if the review is "bad" and gets "bad" votes, it can drop your rank. More quickly than anything else, actually.

Thanks for info Carrie. Makes sense but will also make me try to be careful about what which I write about as well if I don't have much useful information to say about it. Thanks.

Keep in mind that a review doesn't need to be long to be useful. Short and to-the-point reviews can also get ranked highly. Just think about what the toy does (or can do), things that people interested in the toy would like to know but aren't evident from the pictures, and perhaps things you would have liked to have known. You don't have to tell the world how much you liked the toy and what you do with it, just give people a feel for the toy.

Good points Scott. I guess I'm still trying to learn what users are looking for. The review rating serves as my barometer of what works and what doesn't. Maybe I'll try and write some that I think may provide something that's not apparent from the description and photos like you said. Thanks.

may I suggest the mentor program as well? they are incredible for pointing out things you forgot to mention and may help balance some of reviews of toys you did not like.
