Writing reviews improves your ranking. Having well rated reviews increases your ranking as well. However, very few people are ranking reviews anymore. I think it is also affected by activities like making forum posts, comments on reviews, etc. Amount of time you are a member also has something to do with it. This may have changed but as far as I know those affect your ranking.
