anal health

I hear a lot of debate over whether anal penetration is safe and healthy, which can be concerning for the long term effects...

recently heard that doctor on the tyra show talking to sasha grey and telling her that if she keeps doing anal then she will need adult diapers... she replied with "that's not true"...

so what are people s opinions on this?
is it safe... if you do it right?
does it depend on the size of things you are inserting?
is their a size people shouldn't go beyond to ensure the integrity of their anus?
is their a difference between a guys and girls anus and its durability for anal penetration?

i have seen a lot of stuff where people who receive anal penetration, their outer sphincter takes on a lightly more stretched appearance... not to say that effects the operation of the anus and bm's...

Anal sex will not cause fecal incontinence. However, it can cause anal fissures, peri-anal tears, irritation, and it can irritate any varicosities (hemorrhoids) locally. One must take the time to relax, lubricate, and use a condom for anal sex. It is even easier to spread STI and viruses rectally.

You shouldn't feel pressured into anal sex just because others may enjoy it. Some people feel that the rectum is the very end of the human sewer, for out put and not input, and its ok if you feel that way. No one should be made to feel "Uncool" if they say no to anal sex. Done correctly, it should not be harmful. Women carry and extra set of precautions because the wall between the vagina and anus is very thin and easy to tear, the second being the anus is closer to a women's vagina and urethra and it is eay to drag bacteria from the anus to another orifice with the wrong sweep of a penis, toy, toilet paper, washcloth, hand or piece of fabric. Always urinate after anal sex to prevent urinary tract infections.

Another thing, doctors don't know everything about every medical specialty. I've had beaucoup de doctors as patients and am surprised how much they forgot from their training post residency. Unless that doc talking to MS Gray was a proctologist, internist, gynecologist etc, or announced their credentials and specialty, we may just be receiving an opinion rather than real medical advice.

I agree with Misha. I'm no specialist, but everything I've read has said anal sex is totally safe if done right. I have been sticking penis-sized objects in my anus for 10 years, and have been having anal sex for 8. I do this regularly, at least three times a week. I relax and stay well lubricated, and I do Kegel exercises regularly. I can tell you from experience that my stretched anus has always quickly returned to it's normal size. therefore, I treat every anal penetration like it's "the first time," going slow and using gentle caution. I have honestly had more mis-haps during vaginal sex!

I searched some medical literature and I couldn't find much that links anal sex with incontinence later in life. There was one article at link that says anoreceptive men are more likely to experience incontinence than non-anoreceptive men, but it was a small study and you can make of it what you will. Damage to the external or internal sphincter from anal sex could happen if it's not done safely, but if your taking things slow there should be no problem. I don't know if there's a difference between a men's and women's anus, but I expect they're similar enough. I'm a man who uses anal toys every now and in my experience I've never had problems with stretching. I always return to normal fairly quickly and haven't had any issues. If you want to read more about anal sex there's a good article from Duke University link.

In general it seems like most studies of this sort (dealing with "taboo" subjects) aren't really done well - many of the ones I've found are case studies dealing with people who had problems and they don't go into the "I wonder why there were problems" line - they just stop at the "this happened, therefore ___ is bad/dangerous"

I do appreciate that there are significant difficulties in doing a good study about "taboo" things, but it would still be nice if we had them.

While individual experiences aren't a substitute for research, I'm also a man who regularly uses toys anally (often mid-sized toys, 1" to 2-1/4" in diameter) as well as long toys. I've been doing it for years, made a few mistakes (mildly bruised prostate after one foolish "power prostate stimulator" experiment) and still doing just fine. The key is plenty of lube, plenty of relaxation, and don't push yourself too much.

I watched that episode and remember thinking that it was very sensationalistic (as those programs are meant to be) and could have used a healthy dose of facts. It's unfortunate that misinformation is being spread around like that. (Misha covered the bases on the real story very nicely above.)

how long to return to normal appearance and size? what if you are having anal sex daily? how does the rectum get a chance to recover? how to you avoid looking like those porn shots with the big gaping hole?

it seems like there would be some sort of repurcussion, even if temporary, from having it so "open" afterwords.

ok, there are my embarassing questions for the day...who am I kidding, i don't get embarassed.

As long as your have a good warm-up, use lots of lube, always be careful, there should be no long term effects except the benefit of being better able to control your sphincter.

I had anal fissured. My proctologist informed me I had them and than a month later I felt a little pinch feeling confirming it to me. I was having anal for almost an hour, every day for six months. I was always well lubed with a penis sized dildo. Don't know what the factor was but I was forced to quit it cold turkey. Been on the wagon for six months now. I miss it so bad but we now have a second child and my free time alone when my wife is out to work is taken up by the kids so I have no free private time.

Once the fissures heal you should be able to start again as soon as you get time (but do make sure they're 100% healed, give it a month or more).
