I started to say no, that the packaging doesn't affect my purchase decisions at all, but then I remembered that there was one toy I specifically did not buy because of the box.
It was this one. The reviews all made it sound like this would be a good toy for me, but ultimately the weird wording and cheap look of the packaging made me doubt the quality of the piece.

That's interesting and I could see myself doing that, too. Funny thing is, I don't mind if a toy just comes with no real packaging, just in a plastic bag or whatever.
And I get a little annoyed with elaborate packaging, because I can't help thinking how much less the toy would have cost without it (especially since the package is just going into my recycle bin).
But if a company goes to the trouble and expense to create a package that's obviously intended to be nice--and fails--that WOULD make me wonder about the toy itself.
