For the smaller diameters (up to about 1-1/2" to 1-3/4") it's not so much stretching as warming up, and for that the big thing is to just play with something for a while and let your anus get used to opening up. A plug (silicone) with a tapered end is good as well, since it lets you slowly open up around it, and when fully inserted you can "pop" it in and out a bit to relax/warm up/"stretch".

Think big - start small I didn't really understand if you're new or just want to stretch. That's why I'm posting the entire collection I'd recommend however if it's just about stretching skip the start and look the the plugs especially THE Gapers Organic

A kit would be a god idea, start with the smallest, work your way up.

Most kits are made from not-so-nice materials. It's better to get two nice silicone toys, perhaps a plug and a dildo.
