Anyone had success (or failure) with this? I don't particularly like the balls on some dildos and most don't work with my harnesses because they just get in the way. I'm thinking about silicone dildos in particular. I know that silicone is difficult to cut smoothly.
Have you ever castrated a silicone dildo?

I would be scared of leaving tiny cuts in the material for gunk to get in. Of course, on a long dildo made from silicone it might not get too bad and you could always boil it.

With skin like materials (such as Fleshlight soft material) you can slice right through them with a heated metal piece (such as a screwdriver). Dust it well with cornstarch and you're ready to go. Harder materials, I'm not sure, I'd be worried about leaving a jagged edge, maybe look it up?
