Metal/stainless Toy Finish

I'm curious about the finish on metal or stainless steel sex toys. Is it necessary that they remain in perfect condition to be deemed 'useable'?

I have an 'old' stainless steel dildo that's been remarkably well loved, and continues to work well -- however, it's gotten a few battle scars over the years. Nothing major, it's mostly a collection of very very fine scratches to it's brushed finish. It's had them for quite some time, nothing bad has happened to me after using it, and I've always treated it very well (either using antibacterial soap on it, or boiling it after use).

I'd read on another site, that metal/ss toys should be chucked if they're ever scratched. I imagine this is because scratches have the potential to harbor bacteria, but I can't imagine superficial scratches like what mine has can really effect that, all that much, especially if it's cleaned all the time and is still perfectly smooth to the touch...It doesn't snag on anything.

If I had 100% stainless steel toys that had a few small scratches in the finish and the scratches were smooth and didn't snag on anything, I would continue to use them.
I figure I could always sterilize the thing by boiling it if I was concerned about bacteria being harbored in the scratch.
It would be a different story if the toy had a chrome finish.

Yea, that was my feeling, too. My dil is definitely stainless steel (although I bought a delightful njoy wand here earlier this month).

I really love steel toys, and mine had worked so.. uhn, flawlessly, for so long, it seemed kind of strange that they'd be so delicate they'd have to be tossed if there was only a surface scratch, but I wasn't sure. I suspect just keeping it clean and smooth will be good enough -- unless it becomes gouged. I hope I never drop that thing again!

As long as surface remains smooth, steel, as well as glass toys, seem all right to me.

Steel toys are rather expensive, hence you should take more care of them if you don't want to spend your money on good toys over and over. I would even suggest you have a toy box.

I agree -- but sadly, a toy box doesn't stop a traditionally graceful person from dropping the toy in a sink when washing it. Chipped the sink badly, but only scratched the dildo.

Minor scratches are not a big deal, as long as you're cleaning it well- and it sounds like you are! I know, I'm a klutz with things too... and really, anything that's not deep enough for you to be concerned about scratching yourself with is still cleanable.

It's a slightly different matter with glass toys, for anyone wondering about those... Small scratches or cracks in glass can easily lead to breakage (not so with steel), so those need extra care and should not be used if there's any damage to them.

CW -

So you mean I prob. shouldn't be inserting the glass dildo I dropped, broke, and gorilla glued back together?

(just kidding - I now use it for demos and workshops).

Can steel break...ever? I didn't think so...

I work in a machine shop and I just got done turning up some dildos for my wife out of aluminum on a metal lathe. In order to get a really polished finish I start with coarse Scotch-Brite and work up to fine Scotch-Brite, and do the final polish with a fine polishing material used for polishing metal like silverware and such. The finished product has a really shiny look to them. The person up above who posted about scratches on a stainless dildo could do something similar to what I do with coarse and fine Scotch-Brite. Maybe a husband or boyfriend has a metal lathe or wood lathe with a chuck to clamp it up and spin in and make it like new. There is something unique about metal dildos, they have an elegant look and feel with a little more weight to them. My wife just went crazy when I was using one of them on her. I think it was just the right size and shape to catch her G spot going in and out.

I seriously did that with a glass plug...yeah I dented the sink AND the freakin' plug broke. I got in so very much trouble. I have to be SUPER careful with my other glass one now (apparently it was custom made or some shit).
