I bought a new toy and have tried using it several times but it begins to hurt every time- I'm not sure if the pain is being caused because it it 2.5" longer or because the circumference is about .5" wider. I'm guessing it's the extra length because it only becomes painful when i get toward the base- like maybe its to long? Any ideas on how to deal with this or should I just stay away from longer toys?
pain from length or girth

Pain also could be because of the material--Jelly, for example, has a history of burning people during use.
As for the pain, you could get around it by warming up with smaller toys and then using your larger toy once you're aroused.

how does one figure out "their size limit?", what type of pain is consistent with a toy being to wide, vs to long- It becomes uncomfortable at about 6" my other toys have been shorter 5" or less I don't think its the girth I measured it, only a .25" jump from my last toy. I've tried using lube, warming myself up, even had a few drinks to see if that helped me relax and with the pain both helped but I still experienced distracting pain- like pulling apart when inserting the toy past 5" or 6"

Material pain would be evident from the first time the toy makes contact with a mucous membrane. As long as there isn't a noticeable increase in the circumference of the toy at the base it's probably the length. You don't say where you feel the pain, though - that might help.

I would assume the pain from a toy being too long would be in a different place than the pain from a toy being to wide. in my case, pain from lenth is sharp, deep and feels a bit like being impaled. pain from width, is very shallow and feels a bit like I am being torn apart, vagina first. seems a little graphic, but that was the best way I could explain it. I think one finds their limit through trial and error. "nope, that one is too long, lets try this." or "nope, that one is too wide, lets try this thinner one over here."
