Gift Card or Item

Contributor: TheToyGuy TheToyGuy
My current dilemma.

Do i buy the item they really want and give it to them or do I just give them a gift card so they can get it themselves or buy something else?

Personally, I would go with the gift card option. It's better to let a person decide in the end/long run what they want and what they think will suit them best. I've had things I wanted in the past on a wishlist, only to change my mind last minute when browsing other products of the same category and reading reviews on a multitude of choices. I hope that helps!

GC, then if have issue can go back to retailer. Otherwise you could be in the middle and they will likely drop it. If lost in transit may never know you sent it. They would be able to contact seller if they ordered and expected it's arrival.

You say "...item they really want..."

So based on that, YES! Buy it & give it to them. It shows that you put some thought & effort into giving them the gift. And most retailers will give you a 'gift receipt' so the item can be exchanged/returned for whatever reason.

I always appreciate a gift when I know the gift-er took the time to find out what I like & made the effort to find & buy it. Someone giving me a gift out of obligation is really meaningless.

Strangely enough I've decided to go "neither".

I won't get them a gift card (or give money) nor will I get them the item they really want.

I get them something they actually do need, something that will have them smacking their head for totally forgetting about it.

ahhhh, but be careful. Be sure it's not at the bottom of the 'things needed' list. Nobody wants to get another sweater or tie.

Why choose? Why not do both? In an effort to not make things too expensive, I'd give said person a gift card that covers the majority of the cost of the other item they really want.

If you are positive in what they want go for that. Personally I don't give gift cards, I feel there's not a lot of thought put into them and they're just not personal.

My preference is money, then I can buy whatever I want or just do my favorite thing to do which is put it in my childrens' savings account in the bank!
