#AskEden - Material Confirmation?

Contributor: potstickers potstickers
Can we get an official confirmation from the company Male Power that their new bamboo line of men's lingerie are made from non-toxic methods of processing bamboo into clothes? Everything I read says that soft bamboo fabrics are rayon and that methods that keep the bamboo's natural fibers and antimicrobial properties intact make very course, EXPENSIVE, fabrics. I know that bamboo itself is a more sustainable alternative to other rayon precursors, but labeling products as bamboo when they aren't is just misleading consumers (and I couldn't find any evidence of companies selling the sustainable, non-toxic versions of bamboo fabrics). I'd just like some confirmation before I think about buying them for my boyfriend.

Based on the research I did, it seems unlikely that their bamboo products are truly made with bamboo fabric. As you said, true bamboo fabric is coarse, while Male Power claims their bamboo underwear is "smooth, soft, and luxurious" while being 95% bamboo. Here is a page from the FTC regarding the issue: Have you been Bamboozled by Bamboo Fabrics? Based on that, it is more likely that the Male Power underwear is actually rayon made from bamboo, which is very different than true bamboo and lacks the antibacterial properties that Male Power claims. Perhaps EF could contact Male Power for clarification since the FTC considers marketing rayon as bamboo to be illegal?

This is a good idea. I think someone should submit a support ticket to find out.

Thank you Maxim! I sometimes get too excited over these environmental issues; I didn't mean any offense to Male Power. Unless of course they're knowingly mislabeling their products. But maybe they aren't. Then I'd be

I just got these for my boyfriend the other day and the sure FEEL similar to Rayon. They're very silky and nice, but not 'slinky' feeling. It's almost like a heavy cotton? SUPER stretchy. Now I don't know if this proves or disproves it, and I am very interested in hearing the answer, I just figured that I should add what they feel like in person.

Rayon can be made from any cellulose--I've even made it from regular paper torn into pieces and dissolved in water. In some countries, bamboo is a popular source of cellulose and is used to make paper. However, it sounds like some are using the name "bamboo" for cloth for marketing reasons.

I'm not speculating on Male Power's products.

But is it made using low-toxicity methods?
