The sizing on this corset is in inches. What area do you measure for your size? The waist or bust?

It depends on your build. I have a smaller waist than is proportional so I usually measure by my waist size. Unless there are no laces, then I measure by my bust size--no adjustment.

I think this is why I've avoided ordering any of these. I think I'd prefer my wife go get sized for one of these prior to ordering.

I believe you are suppose to go with your bust measurement. I'm always confused on what size to order too when they are listed like that. But I think it's something like this.
32 = XS - S
34 = S - M
36 = M - L
38 = L - XL
40 = XL - 1X
42 = 1X - 2X
44 = 2X - 3X
46 = 3X - 4X
32 = XS - S

40 = XL - 1X
