I go by what color I like in the styles I like. Babydolls, for example, do not flatter my somewhat larger size, but a corset will usually look great on anyone regardless of your shape.
There are some lower-cost pieces of lingerie available, so you can always pick out a few different styles in colors/patterns you prefer and give them all a try. Then go all out for the pricier pieces.
