Do you use different lube for sex and for your toys?

Contributor: Adriana Ravenlust Adriana Ravenlust
Just curious if you prefer something else for your toys than intercourse or do you use the same lube for all your activities? If you use different lubes, what are they and why?

I just replied to this but somehow it didn't go through... as I said in my original reply, I'm a big fan of silicone lubricant. However, silicone toys and silicone lubricant don't mix. While some silicone composite toys are compatible with silicone lubricant the factor always rests on the purity of silicone in both the toy and the lubricant. So for my silicone toys I've been sticking with Climax H2O.. it gets absorbed very quickly, but hey.. it's water based heh.

For sex I love silicone lubricant. I love it, love it, love it. I managed to find a really great lube. It's Doc Johnson's Lube (love garden). I picked up a bottle at Target for $2.24 (it was on sale obviously) and it's worked very well for us. link

Silicone for everything but silicone toys (Pink) and water based for all our silicone toys ( System JO, Climax H20 are our favorites but we also use others). We are always looking for new ones to try.

I use the same lube... O'My natural lube, for both. But I have never tried a silicone lube. For those of you who prefer it for sex, why?

I use a water-based lube for everything--but I've never actually tried a silicone lube before, so I might have to give that a go.

Silicone lube is just fantastic. With the water based lubes I've tried (there's been a lot of um!) they get absorbed quickly and usually have a really runny consistency. Where as silicone lube glides, it's a little thicker, and it always stays wet (even in the bath or pool!). Silicone lube is also good for people with sensitive skin (if you buy a kind without additives)...

I use Maximus or Probe for everything. They're both water-based, thicker and don't dry up fast. I've tried the 'fake' Boy Butter, which is a creamier water-based lube. My experiences with silicone lube have left me not really interested in putting it in any holes, mine or someone else's, though I guess that's very subjective. Last one I used was Gun Oil...

Hmmm--the silicone lube without additives sounds good, but then, so do Maximus and Probe, since they're water-based. A thicker lube would definitely be nice--the stuff I'm using now is pretty runny.

I have tried to love silicone based lubes, but they just don't cut it for me. I've actually found that they tend to be incredibly watery and difficult to control because of it. They seem to spread really fast and don't stay where I need it, thus forcing me to apply more. The greasy feeling also bugs me. I prefer the thicker lubes like Maximus for toy play and anal. I am currently in love with Sliquid Silk and Liquid Silk (same company that makes Maximus) which are both hybrids and creamy which is much more natural feeling to me. They are my first choice for penis to vaginal sex, but aren't safe with silicone toys because of the silicone in them. I've found that silicone lube doesn't last as long as Maximus does for me, because the Maximus stays where I put it and doesn't end up feeling like somebody prayed me down with Pam. Silicone also leaves more friction than a good water based lube does, which I don't like. The Hybrid water based lubes with silicone in them seem to be my favorites, though they won't knock Maximus off the pedestal for me.

I used a sample of Bodyfluid (silicone lube by fun factory) last night, and we fell asleep right after sex, without bothering to clean up first, gross I know. Anyways I was still greasy for our "good morning" sex, and while it was nice to not have to put on more lube, I didn't feel sexy at all. I purposefully avoided looking at the sheets, because I am sure they are a mess. Water based lubes don't stain either as a general rule, which is nice for messy people like my husband and I. I want to try the O'My flavored and natural lubes too, as they sound fantastic.

I think the whole debate over which is better, silicone or water based, is such a personal choice. For me the cons outweigh the pros for silicone lube, but for others the pros outweigh the cons. I would suggest anyone who uses lube for vaginal uses (I haven't tried either for anal play yet) at least try one of the Liquid Silk or Sliquid Silk lubes, as they feel amazing and are long lasting but easy to clean off. They really are awesome

I have also not had great experiences with silicone lube but I'm so attracted to Pink that I may try again. Thanks for all the input.

I know I've read it in a review, but I can't remember which or who. What were the "premium" silicone lubricant ingredients? I thought I remember there being three that were the "good" ones.
Thanks if anyone knows!

Most of the time, I use a simple water-based lube with no glycerin, and that's just because I hate the idea of switching up for different things, like, "Well, THIS lube is what we'll use for foreplay, but THIS lube is what we'll use for sex, unless we're in a certain position, and then we'll use THIS lube," etcetera etcetera. A little bit of a really good and simple silicone lube is fine by me if it's what my partner wants, although I hate the staining from silicone lubes, and I REALLY hate that I have to do extra clean-up with it.

Dimethicone, dimethiconal and cyclomenthicone. May have been my review of the System Jo Personal Anal Lubricant. I got the info from an article by Metis Black, the president of Tantus. link

According to the article, if a silicone lube lists anything other than those 3 ingredients than it is not a pure silicone lube, nor is it premium. One lube that fits into that category is Eros bodyglide, pink would if it didn't have the vitamin E and aloe in it. Those two additives though is what makes it feel better to me than other silicone lubes, and although I prefer water based, Pink is my favorite silicone and I actually don't hate using it (which is how I felt about the system jo anal lube).

Bulma, do you use pink for intercourse? I know it might sound silly but because they label is as being for women, it makes me think it's only for masturbation. LOL

We use only water-based lubes. Seems safer to use something that rinses clean with easily with water. We have found that System Jo seems to work quite well for all applications. They make a line of flavored lubes that aren't too bad.
I just don't like the idea of putting silicone and oils in places where I don't feel they belong.

Did you find that System JO is sticky and tacky? We picked up the water-based lube recently, and I absolutely detest the stuff. It feels great when it's inside me, but as soon as it gets exposed to air, it gets tacky and sticky. (We just have the regular water-based personal lubricant from them.)

Well.........Sometimes re-application is necessary for longer sessions, but I don't mind that. What I do like about it, is that it washes off extremely easily. I am really interested to try "toyfluid" in the waterbased. I have used the silicone one and it is really slickery. Perhaps someday Eden Fantasys will get some in since this is the only place we shop.

haha, two months late on this! I just wanted to put my two cents. For intercourse i use silicone lubricant, the lack of needing to reapply is a great help as well as not feeling sticky. I use water based on most of my toys..most of my toys are silicone. For silicone, i prefer Pjur Backdoor, because it has a muscle relaxant. for water based, i prefer sliquid H2O ride, which is the male packaging of sliquid sassy.

I wanted to say from reading others entries, Bulma, I know you stated

I just finally saw this post too. I like Liquid Silk for intercourse, since it's quite light and natural feeling and allows you to feel skin-on-skin friction.

When using toys, I usually want to eliminate most friction, so I like thicker and slipperier lubes like Maximus, Climax H20, or Toyfluid.

grr....it happened again, part of my post got cut off... just realized this, to Bulma, I know you stated you like sliquid silk and liquid sex because its a hybrid but dont use it with toys because of the silicone. However, during an audience with the Sliquid representative, Silk is supposed to have such a diluted form of silicone that it shouldn't harm silicone devices at all. I'd suggest trying a spot test if you do want to try it out.
