What do you do when gels or lubes go horribly wrong?

Contributor: Badass Badass
Me and my fella recently tried a new gel in the bedroom. The gel is intended for penile use. The first two times I used it on him, he complained of a burning itch, but he didn't run to the bathroom or anything, so I assumed the sensation it was giving him was "tingling" and he just wasn't used to it. Neither time could he get a hard on.

When I tried it a third time, on an already hard penis, the hard on died and by today, he has a rash situation going on. Lame, right?

My question to you is: Have you ever experienced this type of reaction? And how did you handle it?

I've never had a reaction to lubes or gels, and neither has my partner.

I would think washing it as soon as he experienced the burning sensation might help. Since there's a rash now, you could either wait for it to clear up or go to a doctor. Maybe aloe vera might help but I'm not a professional so I can't be sure.

Never happened to me, I stick with safe and basic water-based lubes.

He might be allergic to something in the lubes. Kinda mean to keep using them on him after the second time.

It's never happened to me or my man. We used water-base lubes since they tend to be more body-friendly but they do have the downside of not lasting as long (I don't need them by that time anyway).

We have not had these reactions, but I also purposely avoid anything that advertises itself as warming, cooling, tingling, or anything else of the like.

Hubby and I both think this sounds like an allergic reaction. If he still has a rash, I'd definitely see a doctor. Also, you may want to avoid trying anything that causes itching and burning a second time. That's usually not a good sign.

I've had a reaction to a tingling gel before. Luckily it was minor. I tested it on my hand prior to use to be sure and when I felt my skin reacting badly I knew it wasn't for me. I tend to 'test' products I'm unsure of on my arm because I'm scared of the idea of having a reaction in my intimate areas.

It sounds to me that in this case the product reaction badly. You may want to visit a doctor. Next time might I recommend patch testing if you are not sure? Nothing's quite as painful as an allergic rash.

I've never had a bad reaction to a lube. Like most products of these types, I try to get some feedback from other users before I try something I am not used to, so I can avoid something that's "not quite right." The worst problem I have had with a lube is that it's overly messy or doesn't work for me, in which case I might pass it along to a partner who wants to give it a shot, or just toss it.

I've had reactions to Sliquid lubes. It wasn't horrible burning and such, but it felt like someone poured hydrogen peroxide into my vagina, plus a funky smell. The parabens in Maximus will cause a similar (though lighter) feeling if I'm too rough with a toy when I use it.

I'm not sure what ingredient in Sliquid is giving me problems...though I saw some comments on reviews saying Potassium Sorbate can cause reactions in some people, so I believe that might be it. Sadly trying to find many lubes that are glycerin and paraben free AND also Potassium Sorbate free is pretty hard.

And in my case, nothing really helped other than just not using the product anymore (had to deal with the weird burn/bubbling/ouchy feeling inside until it just went away - for me, usually the next day I couldn't feel it anymore, however the funky smell was still there for about two days).

I have to stay away from lubes with Glycerin and Parabens in them so far the ONLY lube I have found that doesn't bother me is Sliquid Botanically Infused and Sassy Booty. If I use a lube once an it burns it doesn't get touched again, usually I go an rinse it off. If I am still left with a burn or itch I contact my doctor an they usually give me something for a yeast infection to help with the itching and burning.

If your husband experienced this a 2nd time I wouldn't have tried a 3rd time. Honestly after the 1st time it would be never again.

I have had a bad reaction to oil-based lubricant. I got an infection as a result. As many have already said, I stick to water-based organic lubricants now and I haven't had any problems.

i always buy hypoallergenic when possible, even though i dont have very sensitive skin. i use sliquid h2o, only has about four or five very safe ingredients.

This wasn't an allergic reaction, but I once made the mistake of using warming lube for anal. Very bad!
