How long does silicone lube stick around?

Contributor: EffinSara EffinSara
Does anyone know how long silicone lubes stays in the vagina after use? I ask because I'd like to know how long I need to wait before safely using one of my silicone toys.

Obviously it's probably not safe right after, and I'm assuming it's probably safe after a week, but I'm curious about a more exact answer.

Um.. I did not hit post, wtf. Interesting question. I had never considered it but I would expect it to be gone well before a week

good question!
I know it's usually gone by morning when i use it. I wish there was an anti-silicone lube out there. That's pretty much the only thing i don't like about silicone, it takes sooo long to go away.

Depending on the toy you're using, you should be ok to use your toy in the same encounter as long as you wash it really well right afterwards.

Is there a doctor in the house?

yea, that IS a good question. I'd like to know this too! My husband and I use condoms and diaphragms for birth control. When we use condoms we use silicone lube, we can't use silicone lube with my diaphragm so i'd like to know when I am safe to use the diaphragm after using silicone lube.

Here's an About site that has some answers...but not entirely answering this particular question. It also states that minimal research has been done in some areas of lubrication.

Njoy!

This is a really good question that I'd love to know the answer to! I was just wondering the same thing the other day.

Bumping this thread because I was wondering the same thing today. Anybody know? Anybody had a bad experience? Have some advice?

I'd love to know as well! Only thing I do know is that once it spilled on our shelving unit in the bathroom and ever since that thing always had a film, it was like impossible to get clean. Ugh.

I'm not, like, a professional or anything but I will say, from my own experience, it's pretty much safe within an hour or two for sure.

I use silicone lube almost exclusively. I actually often use silicone lube on my silicone toys. *gasp* I can't count the number of times we've started having PIV or anal sex - where we always use silicone lubes - and decided to incorporate a toy or two that also happen to be silicone.

I have never had a problem with any toys from Vixen (though I am extra careful and don't do this with Vixskin), Tantus (ditto the extra care with O2), Fun Factory, Evolved or LELO.

Do I recommend you use silicone lube with silicone toys? No. But a high quality lube paired with a high quality toy usually isn't an issue. Within a few hours, you should definitely be totally safe.

Best bet?

Do a patch test on the base of your toys with the lube you want to use.

I use Better Sex Essentials Silicone lube and ID Velvet primarily and have not had a single worry with them.

Of course, I may just be lucky but Tantus does say that Pjur Bodyglide silicone lube is okay with their stuff.

Also? Clean the toy really well when you're done, making sure to use a good soap and really warm water to get all the lube off.

I would imagine that if you have a favorite lube you use almost exclusively that a small patch test on each silicone toy you get would take the worry out of using it, good advice! That's what I'm gonna do when I get home. It would be good to have a sort of list as to what lubes do interact with specific toys. Without a standardized system of materials in toys it can feel like walking in the dark with a blindfold on.

This is a very interesting question.

Your body secretes at least2 teaspoon of "cleaning" fluid (vaginal fluid) from the vagina every day. I would think that would be enough to remove it all. So...I'd guess 24 hours is a safe bet.

So glad we've got some estimates/suggestions My personal situation was after using silicone lube for masturbation, I wanted to use a VixSkin toy and was afraid it would get damaged. I don't use silicone lube much, so it was a new situation for me. Thanks for the info!

I saw ~LaUr3n~ post the 24 hour "guestimate", I'm wondering what kind of window should be observed for anal play, since I don't know if the body produces "cleaning" fluid like it does for the vagina. Thanks!

I have used silicone at night and the next morning use a silicone toy with water-based lube with no ill effects. Note that it was Better Sex Essentials and Tantus silicone, so it just may be that the two are compatible. So like 12 hr with a BM in between.
