Lubricant Testing (Benchmarks for review)

Contributor: Lucky21 Lucky21
So, I am testing a bunch of lubes for a mega review, and I was thinking about some basic benchmarks. Because actual sex/masturbation review can be totally "environmental" I was wondering if you all had any other ideas for benchmarks that I could use.

Here is what I have so far.

Rub Test (Seconds)

Vertical Hold Test Flat Surface (Seconds)

Vertical Hold Test From Finger (Seconds)

Any other ideas?

Dwtim does a flame test...but I would watch out for those, can be dangerous, lol. You should see one of his videos.

Fabric-staining, maybe? Skin absorbency?

Taste/smell are a given. I'm thinking of benchmarks that I can scientifically run. I hope none of the lubes I am testing are going to flame. yikes!!! Kkay, I like fabric staining. Good thing I have a solid color set of sheets that I could sacrifice.

Is it reactivated by getting wet again? The fabric staining is a GREAT idea. My lady and I both have dark-colored sheets and staining can become an issue.

Hypoallergenic?
Does it get sticky after a while?
Does it get runny after a while?
Compatibility with materials?

Really the only test that I do with my lubricants before my reviews are actually using them, then I review each category, (oral sex, hand job, anal sex, vaginal sex, toy sex...etc).

How does it feel after it drys? Does it moisturize, does it feel sticky, roll up in little balls? How easy does it clean off?

Like Naughty Student said, some silicone based lubes can be flammable. So every silicone lube I try gets that test. It may not seem important, but what if someone is using it for a massage with candles by the bed? The one I had that was flammable (Better Sex Essentials) goes up pretty fast and easily so a candle that accidental falls over could be a real mood killer.

Another idea to go along with your "Hold" tests; Place a drop of each kind on a smooth surface, like a CD case, and then tilt the case up. Wait a few seconds and note the results. I like to take a picture to show how the fare.

Thanks, guys for the feedback. I totally agree that the best way to test lubes are to actually use them, and will talk about that for every single lube. But what I am talking about is ways you can actually benchmark a lube. We all have lubes that work really well with our bodies, but I am talking about something that you can put real numbers on.

Dwtim, I saw your video on flammable lubes, and am more than willing to test it, but I'm pretty much only covering water based or hybrid lubes in my mega review so I don't know how applicable that would be for this, but if I do a mega silicone round-up at some point, that will be on the benchmark list.

I like the fabric staining idea. And of course the taste and smell.

After that I think a comparison of how long the lube lasted with and without a condom would be interesting.

I'm also a sucker for detailed information about ingredients. Right down to the nitty gritty. What's in it, why are they there, what effect do they have on your body, how do they compare to alternative ingredients that achieve the same purpose, how eco are they... that sort of thing.
