What are your personal lubrication habits?

Contributor: Leil@ Leil@
Dear friends!

We have plenty of various discussions about different sex toys and sex practices. But it seems like one small but very important detail hasn’t gotten proper attention and scrutiny. I’m talking about lubrication and I feel like we should put more emphasis on it because lubricants can improve sex life significantly and bring it to another level.

So I’ve prepared a few questions for you about your lubrication routine. Feel free to answer all or just a couple of them, ask counter and follow-up questions, and share your thoughts and experience!

1. What kind of lube you prefer and why?
2. Do you use sundry types of lube for different sexual activities and sex toys or you favor using one-type-fits-all?
3. For what purposes do you use lubricants? (for providing enough wetness, for reducing friction, adding or intensifying sensations, for massage, your option)
4. How often do you use lubricants?
5. How much lube do you need for a seamless sex session?
6. Would you rather buy a large bottle for long-time using or purchase small volumes more frequently is more up your alley?
7. How often do you have to fill up with a supply of lubricants?

I’ll appreciate your time and contribution a lot!

I guess I gonna start with answering myself.

1. I prefer water-based lubes because they are very versatile, not sticky, not greasy and easy to wash out.
2. I use water-based lubricants almost for all my sex sessions. I have bought some time ago a bottle of coconut oil for anal play though.
3. Basically I use lube for additional wetness and smoothness, to prevent tearing and injury and to make my playtime pleasurable and comfortable.
4. Pretty often - each time for anal, frequently for handjob or masturbation, especially when using sex toys, and sometimes during vaginal intercourse.
5. Usually I use a few drops of lubes and everything goes smooth.
6. I am the one who likes to make considerable reserve and not to think about new purchasing for a long time.
7. Once in a while. I can't say for sure, because I've never put attention to how often I renew my lubrication supplies.

1) Water-based lubes! My favorite is Sliquid Sea. The seaweed extracts helps prevent my constantly-recurring UTIs. Other lubes make me get UTIs all the time. I like water-based ones because they're compatible with everything I use. Also, they mimic vaginal lubrication just the way I like it.
2) I just stick to one-type-fits all. I like sticking to lubes that use body-safe, non-toxic materials (looking at you, parabens).
3) Although I'm an overall wet person, I really like the slippery feeling that lube seems to throw in my general direction. I enjoy fantasizing that things are so slippery that they're constantly overflowing. Additionally, it just feels... more fun.
4) I use lubricant with everything - be it doing kegel exercises with ben wa balls or masturbating. I simply like the feeling of lubricant, I guess.
5) Unfortunately, several re-applications.
6) I actually have two different sized bottles. I have a small 60mL bottle and a big 255mL one. I refill my little bottle whenever it gets empty. Also good for travelling purposes.
7) I refill whenever I'm getting low!

1. We like water-based lubes because we can use them with all our toys without worry. There are a bunch of different thicknesses too with water-based lubes now.
2. Thinner ones for vaginal sex and definitely the thicker, stay in place, lubes for anal.
3. Lube makes everything feel better but is a must for anal.
4. We use lube almost every time we have sex.
5. We might have to add lube once more if things start to dry out a little.
6. I really like the bigger bottles. Better deal and I don't have to keep buying it.
7. We have a ton of lube right now so we are good to go for years.

2. I use a one type fits all.

3. Intensify sensations, it can make things better at times and with use of certain toys.

4. Occasionally during sex, and I use them when I pick out a bigger size toy to use.

5. Just a couple squirts, really not much.

6. I prefer a big bottle.

7. It takes quite a while for me.

1. I like water-based options, though have silicone-based in my arsenal.

2. I have several different types of water-based lubes and a couple of silicone. But I really have my go-to, which I prefer to use most of the time.

3. Lube serves for several purposes - it helps for easy insertion when it comes to anal, or make things go much more pleasant and smooth when it comes to masturbation with or without toys.

4. I use lubes widely, almost every time I have a sex session.

5. Dime-sized amount usually is all I need.

6. I would rather buy a big volume at once. But specially for traveling I have 2 oz. bottle - it's not heavy and takes not much space.

7. I guess 4 oz. bottle of good water-based lube served for maybe a 3 month with several times per week using.

Eayer bssef lubrd work for me. It makes it easier to be sensual. I like to use a lot. The feel of an aroused woman is perfect, for her and.me, being stroked or having intercourse.

We like more natural water based lubes like Good Clean Love. We have also used and enjoyed System Jo H20 lubes, Wicked, and a few silicone ones when we need something extra slick.

We use lubes most of the time except for quickies.

How much we use depends on how long we are going and if we are playing with other toys. The natural lubes never last as long as the other stuff like System Jo or Wicked.

We prefer to buy in larger bottles, 6 to 8 ounces.

1. What kind of lube you prefer and why?
I mostly stick to water-based lubes these days, as they're safe to use with my shiny new silicone toys, and they make clean-up fast and easy. I've used silicone lubes in the past for vaginal and anal sex with a partner, and while they're nice and slick, they're expensive and a pain to clean up....and since they're incompatible with the toys I have now, I really have no use for them. Also, I've found that many high-quality water-based lubes honestly work nearly as well as their pricier, silicon-based brethren.

2. Do you use sundry types of lube for different sexual activities and sex toys or you favor using one-type-fits-all?
Back when I was having vaginal and anal sex with partners, I'd usually stock one liquidy lube for vaginal sex and another thicker, more gel-like lube for anal...but now that it's just me and my toys, I only keep the liquidy kind around, since that's my preference for everything but anal, and I'm not into solo anal play (yet).

3. For what purposes do you use lubricants? (for providing enough wetness, for reducing friction, adding or intensifying sensations, for massage, your option)
I mostly use it for providing additional vaginal wetness when necessary (sometimes I just get impatient and want to get down to business before I'm fully wet and aroused), and/or for reducing friction in areas like my clit, labia, and nipples, so toys and fingers can glide over those areas more sensually.

4. How often do you use lubricants?
For the majority of my sexual activities, past and present, with a partner or without one. Lube (provided it's decent quality and I don't react badly to it) just seems to make everything better.

5. How much lube do you need for a seamless sex session?
It really depends on what I'm doing. For vaginal penetration with a toy or partner's penis, or for a typical masturbation session, usually just a small dollop. If any butt play is involved, however, lube usage increases dramatically, haha.

6. Would you rather buy a large bottle for long-time using or purchase small volumes more frequently is more up your alley?
So long as I know it's a lube I really like and will use, buying in bulk is where it's at. It tends to be a much better value, and I always feel better knowing that I don't have to worry about running out any time soon. However, if it's a lube I haven't tried before, I just assume start with a small bottle, because I don't want to end up with a gallon of lube that I hate. Unfortunately, I've learned this this hard way.

7. How often do you have to fill up with a supply of lubricants?
It honestly varies a lot. Sometimes I'm super horny and can use up a 4oz bottle in a month or so....other times that same-sized bottle will last close to a year. My sex drive can be kind of inconsistent.

If I use lube (because sometimes spit is all you need), I use the H2O Anal Lube. It's texture is perfect and it's long lasting. Usage depends on the situation but more often than not I use it to reduce friction and make things glide easier. I use it for penetration, whether that be from hands (fisting) or dildos. I usually have to reapply a few times to get the right amount of lube. I only own smaller bottles but I would like to get a bigger bottle.

We use coconut oil for everything

We use lubrication during every session

We buy a pretty big container and transfer it to smaller containers for the bedroom - one for vaginal use, a separate one for anal use

You seem like someone who could answer this question I've had for a while: is coconut oil safe to use with silicone toys? I've read conflicting information about whether or not oil-based lube in general is okay with silicone. My general impression is that oil and silicone do NOT mix well, but I've also gotten the impression that coconut oil might be an exception to that rule. It's all left me a little confused on the subject.

I have heard that coconut oil is perhaps not the best for vaginal penetration (though I'm sure some people can use it without experiencing any problems) because its antimicrobial properties can mess up the balance of good vaginal flora, but my interest in coconut oil would mainly be as an anal lube in the shower. I like the idea of beginning to experiment with anal in the shower, but obviously water-based lube tends to just wash away when you try to use it in a wet environment, so it'd be nice to have an alternative that wouldn't mess up my silicone toys. I'm curious if coconut oil could be the solution I've been looking for.

All of our toys that are not stainless steel or glass are silicone. We've had many of the silicone dildos for 8-10 years - but we also have some newer ones. We have encountered no adverse issues with using coconut. I will say that I wash them immediately after use with hot soap and water.

As for coconut for vaginal use - my wife for one has no issues with it. Since we like larger dildos, extra vaginal lubrication is a must - suffices to say we go through a lot of coconut oil!

I have never used coconut in the shower - but we do use it for all anal penetration. Since you've mentioned it - I'm going to give it a try someday!

I agree with you that experimenting with anal penetration in the shower is a smart place to begin. However, taking larger toys anally in a standing position is a bit difficult. When you are ready to try something larger, let's say 1.5"+, doing it lying down will probably be more comfortable.

Thanks for your ideas and feedback - have a great time experimenting

Thanks for your reply! I think I'm definitely going to invest in a bottle of coconut oil for my shower. I also always clean my toys immediately after use....and already being in the shower makes that even faster and easier!

I have had anal sex before with a couple partners (and enjoyed it), so my bum isn't a total virgin, but it's been years since then and I've never incorporated anything anal into my masturbation routine, so it'll be something of a new experience for me. I have a set of very modestly-sized silicone anal beads that attach to a vibrating bullet, so I'm anxious to give those a spin, in addition to a few other small dildos and vibrators that I feel will be good anal starter toys (and I know the rules about only using toys that won't get sucked up your butt). Honestly, most of my toys are pretty small. I think my girthiest toy is only slightly over 1.5" so I don't foresee that being an issue for me anytime soon, haha.

Something to take note of - coconut oil comes in a variety of configurations.

We use whole organic oil. It is a solid at room temperature but melts in contact with the skin - which is useful for getting a little extra inside the anus without a lube shooter.

Medium Chain Triglyceride (MCT oil) is a liquid at room temperature. It's great for lube shooters and if you want to a little wild squirting around

Have fun with your anal play - I still marvel at how my wife has gone from "don't go there" to "play with my ass baby - you know it makes me squirt!"

There's a ton of pleasure to be had with the proper preparation - and a whole-lotta coconut

I cook with coconut oil, so I knew it came in solid and liquid forms. (I always know it's a hot day when I walk into the kitchen and see that the normally-solid jar of coconut oil has turned into liquid, haha.)

My first few dates with my vibrating beads in the shower were great! I got a small container of regular (solid-at-room-tempera ture) organic coconut oil to keep in the shower. The heat from the shower makes it the perfect consistency by the time I'm ready to apply it. Not too solid and not too liquidy. It works great!

Last night, I used the beads in my bedroom for the first time (this time with my usual water-based lube) and paired them with a small rabbit vibrator. It was awesome! In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I went ahead and ordered a small vibrating butt plug. It should arrive next week!

CuriousFun - I took your advice and put some coconut oil in the shower. It makes inserting the butt plug so much easier than using water or conditioner (like I use to). Thanks!!
