Burning feeling when using Jelly or Rubber toys...

Contributor: Alt Alt
Okay, well first off I am a guy, and I have experimented for about a year with anal play.
I noticed from early on that I want to try to avoid rubber or jelly (or other similar material) type toys because whenever I put them in my butt (even slowly) it burns REALLY BAD!

Glass and metal toys do not do anything of the sort and I have even tried things as big or bigger than 2 inches (like the Pure Plug 2.0). These are by far my favorite type of toys, but I feel like I might be missing out on some of the other dildos that I have bought and only tried once (too scared to try again), or various other plugs, etc)

Do you think this effect that these types of toys have on me is due to some kind of latex alergy I might have?

The one odd thing that doesn't seem to add up, is sometimes even silicone toys will burn a little (even with lots of lube and going slow, etc). They dont feel like the type of burning like with rubber or jelly, but its enough for be to take it out and want to soothe it with a cold glass plug.
Hell, I can sometimes put in a glass toy even without any lube if I relax enough (but I only usually od this if I am in the shower and any lube would wash off)

Has anyone else had similar effects? (possibly any solutions that worked?)

Would using a non-latex condom on a rubber toy possibly solve the problem?

I actually have a similar problem sometimes. It doesn't seem to matter what type of material I use (silicone, jelly, etc), it just burns sometimes. But unfortunately, I don't really know why it happens. I was told I had hemorrhoids at one point (fun, fun ), so that could be it. Maybe you do, too? Or maybe some other problem? You could have a doctor check it out.

Rubber and jelly toys contain phthalatees which are softening chemicals. You're probably allergic to them! So yes, covering these types of materials with condoms will help for the parts that penetrate you, but whatever isn't covered still has a chance at irritating you.

What do you clean your toys with?

@OneSexyWifey
That sounds very similar to what happens to me. I think you might be on the right track about the hemorrhoids thing, because even I think I can feel some small lump like structures in my sphincter (That really sucks because I love the feeling of anal play =])

At first I wasn't sure what it was, but then I concluded it possibly might be. I am only 18, but I guess it doesn't surprise me because when I was little I use to serious try to force it out! So I guess that explains that. I wish I knew about/was able to do enemas sooner because now its so simple and no more trying to push really hard.

My theory (although I didn't say it originally... feel a little embarrassed about possibly having them) is that they could be causing friction on my inner sphincter and creating a burning sensation if the material is not hard like glass or metal.
(Glass and metal work so good, and feel REALLY GOOD when cooled down. Thank god for companies like nJoy and DonWands )

I think they are seriously limiting me in some anal play, by not only making toys that are not a hard material (like silicone) feel... odd, and also limited the size that I can take in.
nJoys Pure Plug 2.0 seems to work fine if I go slow (about 2 inches) but anything larger can appear to really hurt.

The other day I tried this plug, OMG, talk about pain! I felt it could go in (even though it is about my max due to the bone (would that be the pelvic bone?) but it did seem to hurt more than expected, and possibly it is due to the lump (i guess hemorrhoids) Luckily after 10 mins it seem to feel ok, but before it was causing some serious pain.
link

Anyway, it just sucks because I would seriously love to experiment with some silicone toys, and actually be able to pump them in an out, but that hurts way too much when my “Tests” haha.

@Sleeping Dreamer

The chemical reaction also seems logical.
I think why jelly and rubber burns is because I might be allergic to them.
Possibly why the silicone feels odd/burns a little (but nothing like rubber or jelly) is because of the small hemorrhoids I might have in my sphincter =[.

As for toy cleaning, I just use warm or hot water with soap. (Both for any rubber or jelly or silicone toys I have tried and also for Glass and metal toys)
I don’t think it has to do with the soap or anything because the glass and metal ones work great! (but then again they aren’t porous. Although silicone is also nonporous as well.)

Anyway, thank you both for the info, that was very helpful.

With regards to silicone, whatever silicone toy(s) you're using is/are probably not as slick as glass and metal, so what you may be experiencing is the unpleasantness of extra "drag".

Ariane, I think you are exactly right with that. It only seems to feel good if it is extremely smooth and without friction.

It must deal with hardness and slickness.
I think if my sphincter feels anything that is not of a hard material it starts sending my brain messages like MUST REMOVE, haha! I guess the combo of being solid, being cold, and having smooth insertion/removal is what makes me feel that glass and metal are the best of the best.

Acrylic and plastic also work fine, but it might be something about how glass and metal can be cooled which really feels extremely good.
Funny enough I found probably the best lube I have ever tried: ID Pleasure. It has menthol, and WOW... that is amazing feeling on the sphincter.
So I guess cold is what feels best to me.

That huge glass plug freaks me out. A lot. I am not surprised it caused you pain. It's massive.

Yes it was a major challenge. Mainly wanted to see if I could get it in. It hurt at first, but feel good after about 10 or 15 minutes. Got it over at TheChainGang.com. Was called the Glass Juggernaut, haha! (There is a metal one I got too, but I cannot seem to get that one in yet. It is about 1cm wider I think)

Here is how it compares to the size of my hand: (sorry bout bad image quality, still trying to get this ancient digital camera to work properly )

So seeing that, here is how it compares to the size of nJoys largest Plug (Pure Plug 2.0)
link

and then my other favorite is the Don Wand plug I found over at amazon. Here is how that one compares to my hand:

I will have to take a similar picture to this one, but with the 2 new Juggernauts in there as well, which can allow for a better side by side comparison:

Jelly makes my ass unhappy too. I've decided to stay away from jelly from now on because of other people's remarks and my own irritation experiences.

Oops sorry I didn't mean to press enter there, arg!

It is funny, this one jelly toy which I isolated in like 2 ziplock backs, it is now starting to deform and change colors.

When I first started out with toys about a year ago, I didn't really know how bad jelly (and even rubber) is. Should I probably just throw all the jelly toys I own out? What about rubber toys?

It is unfortunate that I do like one [doesn't seem to burn too much odd enough] and that is the Rotating venus penis. link (Feels really good anally because it can rotate and kind of massage the prostate. Too bad it is not made of silicone. Anyone know of a rotating toy that you enjoy on the G-Spot or P-Spot and is made of silicone?

I am not able to use the rubber, jelly or silicone toys. Discomfort big time! I like a toy that is cool, but warms to your body temp. If you like a hard material try ceramic. Duncan Charles Designs has a rippled ceramic dildo that, for me feels wonderful, easy to use, and stimulates beyond belief!

ceramicwoman1, that is exactly the same for me!

Yes, the warming to body temp get really annoying.
Recently I found a new technique to increase the amt of cooling effect. Don't get me wrong, the ID Pleasure is a nice Zing, but I will now use something called mentholatum (usually used to chapped lips or soothing burns, etc) It has a really good amount of menthol and it is so F-ing stimulating.

When I first put it on my sphincter it was almost too much, but I got used to it soon and will put it on a glass plug and be in heaven .
It basically is like vaseline but with camphor and menthol.

The cooling effect is extremely soothing (whether it is through cold temperature or menthol)
It is funny, a few months back I was watching Myth Busters on Discovery channel and they were doing an episode on what the fastest method is for "Cooling a Six Pack" --> meaning beer. Well that wouldn't apply to me, but... It would apply to my glass and metal toys =]

Here are the results:
link
Basically it was saying:
1. The fridge sucked and could take around 45-1h
2. Freezer wasn't too much better: 35 or so minutes
3. Ice water was not bad: 15 or so minutes
4. Ice + Water + Salt = Best: Only takes about 5 minutes (And i even tested this with a metal plug)

Apparently the salt melts the ice faster and makes the water more cold, and thus the object in there cools down faster.
When I inserted my njoy Pure Plug 2.0 into my ass, it was AMAZING. So cold, soothing, and stimulating. You know it was in there, unlike sometimes when they warm up and you can seriously forget (even with a plug that is 2 inches in diameter, haha)

In any case, thank you SO MUCH for the recommendation to the ceramic toys. I have seriously considered trying one or something similar, like searching for a granite or marble dildo but didn't seem to yield too many results.
Indeed I have somewhat always wondered how these would feel (especially ceramic) since I could always tell that they will adapt to temperature... like how they feel when coming out of the fridge or dishwasher.

Do they ship discretely?
I think I might seriously get one. The one you are talking about (I think the DCD signature) did that feel good anally?
Any other you recommend?

It appears they have some really interesting things:
4 that are similar to a vac-u-lock jelly dildo
1 curved probe
1 wand
3 bubble probes
2 ripple dildos

Is there any other material that you tried that you enjoy a lot?
Metal and glass are of course always amazing (Acrylic and plastic are ok but they dont change temp), although I think you just turned me on to ceramic!

Damn, I can always image what amazing stone dildos they had 1000s of years ago

I have only had similar experiences with Sil a Gel and, sometimes latex (that one might be my imagination).

Hey Adriana,
Yes I sometimes tend to do that.. sorry about that, haha.

Although, the ceramic dildos are still somewhat related since they are a material that would probably not burn.

In any case, perhaps I will create a topic asking others about toys they enjoy which are made of harder materials.

I get a burning sensation whenever I use toys with phthalates. I have never had any issues with silicone, so I guess it might be a texture thing, like Ariane suggested.

Yes I think the burning with rubber and jelly toys are actual chemical-specific due to my skin sensitivity, a it hurts a lot more than it occurring with silicone.

When/if a burning occurs with silicone, I think that is related to having a small hemroid in my sphincter. (I think there might be 2 from feeling around with my fingers) If I go REALLY slow and my butt is warmed up to opening, then it seems to not occur or be a lot less.

I swear when I am a parent, and my kid(s) are having trouble getting it out, I am going to have to teach them how to do an enema, because I seriously messed up my sphincter from when I was little and was determined to get it out by brute force.

Sounds painful. But Activia is probably easier to hand down than an enema.

Indeed it was.
I never enjoyed actually "using the bathroom" before I discovered enemas!

Luckily the ones I have are small and are not visible unless really pushing out (I think they are in the inner sphincter) but they have definitely held me back:
1. Jelly and rubber toys are out of the question
2. Silicone toys are highly less common in my anal play
3. Limited to mainly hard materials only (plastic, glass, metal, etc)
4. Size limitation

By size I mean how I cannot fit an object larger than about 2.1 inches without experiencing pain! (Not to be gross, but, when I start feeling pain in the sphincter, I have noticed a very small amt of blood in the mix of... I think it is called "ass jelly" referring to the natural discharge of the rectum. So that scares me to go any larger) I know its not from inside, because it feels wonderful once the object is in. It is just a matter of getting it through the stubborn doorway.

It is funny, the Pure Plug 2.0 which has a 2 inch Diam goes in fine now without any pain (hell I can even put it in, in the shower without any lube ) but any glass or metal toys that are like 2.3-2.5 inches in diam, and I am in pain... and it is from the sphincter. Just don't think it can stretch more, regardless of how much I relax or want a bigger object in me.
I swear, I could probably do like some pretty extreme objects if I didn't have em (perhaps fisting, haha)

I guess I shouldn't complain because I probably am able to relax and insert objects bigger than many people, but it just sucks because I know I have the potential to do so much more.

At least now I am more aware of everything down there and hopefully will never develop anymore. Anal toys and anal play really changed my life for the best.
Such an amazing experience and whole new world of exploration.

Let me say that the DCD Signature is amazing to me for both vaginal and anal stimulation. You can feel the knob hit just the right spot and the ripples rubbing internally is an added pleasure. You know I like temperature play, but mostly I just lightly lube up my dildo and use. The ceramic just warms quickly to your body once play begins. The bubble design works well too and creates intense orgasms. Stone dildos do sound appealing!! To me it's all about the hard feel!!!

Its the lube that causes it. After doing a lot of tests, I found that some lubes burn more than others. Same thing happens to my gf as well.

Jelly and rubber toys give a small slight burn (maybe this happens after they have been washed or used so many times that they tend to degrade and absorb soap and chemicals?), but when specific lubes are combined it feels like your sphincter is on fire.

The best solution is no lube - warm up in shower with toys that are smooth (glass, mental, firmer silicone) and then use the natural rectal lubrication after the toy is in motion inside of you (the body seems to produce more, given more activity in there with the toy).

An alternative is using vasaline (petroleum jelly). The downside to this is that its hard to get off your fingers (and butt) and its less slippery. But that is worth having no burning at all. Never have I once experienced a burning feeling while using it.

A third is to try and experiment which lubes work best. Ones with Menthol help.
Amazingly ones that are for sensitivity (like KY sensitive, ID moments, Wet naturals) tend to also burn, and sometimes even more (Both for me and my gf)
BTW, most lotions tend to burn anally as well.

Using a condom can help but sometimes if you have a rubber or jelly allergy it's just better to avoid the problem.

I tried with one of the Skyn (non-latex) condoms before and it didn't really help, but that makes sense as to why... due to the lube.
Could help with material though, so I will keep that in mind if any jelly or rubber toys are needing to be used.

Stimulating the rectal walls will cause the rectum to produce more mucus, but it really can't be used as a substitute for enough real lube. The main reason it can't is because it takes a while to get enough of the mucous to even pass as lube, and before that you're playing dry, which can cause tears and hemorrhoids much more easily than playing with enough lube.

In short: Danger, Will Robinson.

I have the burning problem as well, and the answer is to try a bunch of different lubes until you find one that you don't react to. Parabens are a very strong possibility, so make sure that you look for paraben-free lubes. I have good luck with Probe, others have good luck with carageenan-based lubes and other organic lubes. The good news is that if you e-mail the companies many will send you trial packs so you don't have to buy a bottle that winds up being unused.

Vaseline works, kind of. It's in the same boat as Crisco/vegetable shortening. Like you, I don't react to either, but as you noted cleanup is difficult (it's a bit easier with shortening I find, you can use hot water and dishwashing liquid and it's pretty fast). I'm happier with Crisco, but with both they're so heavy that they're best kept for toys that go in and stay put, such as plugs (be careful of the sheets if you use Crisco or Vaseline!). Cutting Crisco with a little coconut oil makes it better, but it's still not ideal.

I didn't see anything definate. I noticed the burning with pink the most, but also the lifelike with vac-u-systems. I noticed that if I lick it it also burns my lips. I've wondered if the color was breking down, if I wash it prior to use it's better. The hard system don't seem to have the same issues. I dont think its alergeric in nature I think it's a ph problem or chemical. I have used petrolem lub and wonder if that may cause a chemical breakdown. I was looking for somoething from the manufacturing..If anyone knows anything post it.

I am Female, and have had this issue whether it is Vaginal penetration or Anal.. and the more these types of material get used mostly by accident, with trying to find ones that DONT BURN... the worse each exposure is, I have also found recently some condoms do the some thing or worse.... I was told it could be the spermicide in the condom and Lubes with spermicide irritate me as well... ALL I know is both have brought me to tears for hours after use.... I only use coconut oil for lube anymore, I buy huge Jar at healthfood store ONLY... It melts on contact with the body has mild antibiotic properties, I get no irritation and It has been used in the islands for years (centuries) to sooth burns, cuts vaginal itching, cuts etc... and it softens the skin like nothing I have ever used!!

I would love to find the solution to the problem, or Dildos need to come with warning that the chemicals used may cause these issues...

Glass I have no issues with both they get expensive, and not very large size choices.

the more Gel like the worse... I notice if it has an Petroleum smell they have the worse it is.... Washing can help I think the longer it sits the chemical moves to the surface, but recently I used a line of anal beads that never gave me a problem in the past>>> and I used them for just a few mins and within an hour I felt like someone poured acidic itch cream all over my bottom!!!
