It contains phthalates (harmful chemicals you can read more about here), and it's just generally a not-so-safe material, though you can use condoms over it to make it safer. It can't be sterilized and is incredibly porous. It often smells horrible, and sometimes it will even feel slimy because of chemicals leeching out the material. It is an easy material to ruin by improper storage. It's just one of the lowest quality sex toy materials out there.

This pretty much covers it. In addition to these points, toys that contain phthalates can induce irritation in those who are more sensitive, and generally jelly toys shouldn't be kept for more than a year (though consistent condom use can lengthen their lifespan somewhat). They're prone to tearing, as well.

Jelly does have its fans, but it seems most toy enthusiasts prefer to go with safer, more easily cleanable materials. I had a jelly toy once that I couldn't stand, and ended up cutting it open to steal the bullet out of it.

Yup, what she said.

I think of it like this: You go to a jewelry store, they have rings with glass stones and rings with diamonds. Which are you going to pick? Sure the glass might be cheaper but the diamond will last way longer.

Exactly! Jelly just wears out and gets nasty after a while, on top of all the things ZenaidaMacroura said. Plus, there's cancer-causing chemicals in some jelly and you never know if it's in your toy or not.

I had a jelly rabbit give me the most awful infection to my vagina not even two months ago. I wrote about it in a review. My OB/GYN almost slapped me in the face for picking a jelly toy!

Because it's an extremely porous material and can cause infections.

That, and it can melt.

Just looking at jelly toys in my store gives me the creeps. Yucky yuck.

Everything that's been said already, plus it feels really gross. But mostly, it's the fact that it isn't body-safe that keeps me from ever even trying such a thing.

Some people have no trouble with jelly, so if you still really want to try it out I'd say there's no harm in trying. You could always use a condom, if it makes you nervous (and this will minimize the amount of bacteria that get on the toy, which is an additional plus). If you don't use a condom and experience irritation, stop right away and wash yourself out as best as you can.

If you are worried, just use a condom. Problem solved!

Got tired of spending on condoms and just threw them all out. Only silicone, glass and metal for us now.

I have a love hate relationship with jelly. I only love that I can use it for long time while glass and other types hurt my vag after 10 minutes.

Yeah, I've had feedback that firm silicone toys are too hard for some folks. If you're looking for something that is softer like jelly toys, they are doing great things these days with elastomer (though it is porous) and developing soft squishy silicone toys as well

Yep, I've heard that Vixskin toys from Vixen and the Supersoft toys from Tantus are both excellent soft silicon.

Most of my toys (I favor rabbit-styles) have been made of jelly and I've never had any problems. Then again, I don't think I fall into either category of having sensitive skin or being prone to infections. I have twice gotten yeast infections, once from antibiotics I was taking for something else, and once from a condom with spermicidal lube. So I guess I'm just lucky and don't have as high of a risk. I don't even use condoms with mine, just wash them thoroughly with water water and toy cleaner. I'm not saying that anyone is overreacting by telling you the dangers of it, just pointing out that some folks don't have the same problems as others. The only silicone toy I've ever had was a disappointing finger vibe that I don't intend to ever use again (not because of the silicone, but because the vibe itself was unimpressive), but I'm hanging onto so I can test hybrid lube's affects on silicone . Yesterday I ordered my first insertable silicone toy and look forward to trying it out and proud of myself for climbing my way up the safety ladder

I just got a jelly toy that burned within about a minute of putting it in so now I'm forever done with jelly. I actually like the way it feels but it smells AWFUL. A very strong awful at that.
