First time sex buyers: There's so much to choose from it can be incredibly overwhelming. Even veteran users can get discouraged when looking for a new toy. It's not like you can try before you buy, so it's hard to know what you're going to get, and if it's going to work for you. This discussion is geared to give advice to novices seeking out their first sex toy, or their first WOW sex toy.
I am focusing on toys for Women in this discussion. (I would love to see a man version from one of you sex savvy studs out there)
I remember when I first got interested in sex toys... I knew I wanted something to enhance my sex life, but was absolutely clueless. I was disappointed with the first few toys I bought. I almost decided sex toys were a waste of money, and could never bring me the kind of pleasure I was so desperately seeking. Luckily, a boyfriend bought me a Hitachi shortly into my venture. TaDa! That one vibrator propelled me into a world of sexual satisfaction I never dreamed possible. I now have an array of maximum satisfaction toys in my chest, and always look forward to adding more. Thank goodness for the magic wand. Who knows what kind of pleasure I would be missing out on if I would have continued down the path of crappy sex toys from sex shops.

Are any of these difficult to use?

I don't know if it would count as difficult use but any G-spot toy tends to be a more difficult to find your "groove" with, IMO.

I think the Hitachi would be difficult for a beginner. Whenever I hear someone say that they recommend it to beginners, I cringe. Beginners don't need/want that much power, plus it's extremely loud!
Some of these could be considered difficult to use if the person is not used to penetration, too. The Passion Wave is pretty thick, as I understand it, and I know would not have worked at ALL for me in the beginning. Small silk would be good for penetration, but not much else. I see Ella as more of an advanced toy.

I agree the Hitachi would be difficult for a beginner.
Of the group you have, I would say the silk medium or the pocket rocket would be good beginner choices.

I completely disagree. The magic wand was my first toy. What could be easier than holding it on yourself and experiencing the fast intense climax it brings you?

The Rampant Rabbit is more complicated because it has multiple settings to play with. It is a freat toy for the price though. I would say the blueberry. It is cheaper, safer, and uber strong for vaginal or clitorial stimulation.

You know I think the vibration intensity of the hitachi could be more than a newbie can bare. However it does depend on the person as Teusday has pointed out.
I would vote for the turbo glider, pocket rocket, silk medium and the glass wand. They are all small and simple without many buttons. They are not too thick so they can be less intimidating.

I guess, but I feel like if I had been handed the Hitachi as my first toy I would have turned and ran. Even after testing toys for a while, the Hitachi scared me. Plus, it made my vulva itch.

I feel like a first toy should have more subtlety than the Hitachi does. Starting out, people do not need that much power.

I was new to toys not all that long ago, and I think the best way to start is with a simple boring slimline vibrator, so you can experiment a little bit before diving off the deep end. Looking over my purchases of the last few months, I think I've done remarkably well at picking out toys based on what I liked previously, and I think the key has been to take the time to really explore each toy to get the most out of it, and also to learn the most from it.
The Hitachi scares the crap out of me, personally, but everyone's different.

I would personally go for the Fun Factory Laya Spot. It's easy to use, not *too* powerful (a la Hitachi), but is enough for most people to get there. It was my first toy and I definitely don't regret the purchase. It gets a lot of use still from me and my boyfriend.

All I know is, as for difficulty, don't get the girl Rock-Chick for a first toy! I have one and I still can't get off with it! A friend's boyf. thought it was cool so he bought it for her, she's only owned one toy before and it was a basic clit stimulator. The rock chick was a huge flop. All she said what "what the hell is this? You want me to do WHAT with this thing? Hey, Alley was right! It looks like a ray gun from the future!!!" Yeah, I think a basic traditional vibe is best in these situations.

Hum, this is such a hard question because every woman has different needs and experiences. When I purchased my first toy, I had not only never used a toy; I had also not had sex of any kind except some manual masturbation for MANY years. I needed a very gentle toy that would not intimidate me. A few days ago I reviewed the Butterfly Kiss, which is the first toy I bought (and I thank EF's reviewers for guiding me in that direction), and I wrote in the review that it is a good beginner toy.
I could NOT have used a Hitachi, no way, never. I made the mistake of buying a toy that was too large for me. Any beginner toy for me would have to be slim.
That said, other women with different experiences obviously can use the Hitachi and can take larger toys.
Price is also a factor. When I bought my first toy, I did not want to spend more than $20.00 or so. I had no idea what my reaction to the toy would be, and I didn't want to throw money down the drain. I bet a lot of women are in the same position.
Don't ask me what my most expensive toy is now!! Just a tad over 20.00.
BTY, I have to give kudos to EF. The website is very user friendly and welcoming for the beginning user.

I think it's a misconception that people can't handle or don't need strong vibration starting out. I've always enjoyed my powerful toys and my not-so-powerful toys equally but for different reasons.

My first one was Jenna's Jewel's Royal size (the bigger one, although it's not that big), so perhaps I'm biased. It's still fun to play with and it's inexpensive

These post really help in what to buy
01/28/2011
any should work wel, depends on how you want to use a toy
02/01/2011
As a beginner, try to ask yourself what you want in a toy. Internal stimulation, or external, or both. I found external clit stimulation to be easiest to get off with, so I went with a cordless bullet for an intro toy and enjoyed it immensely.
02/26/2011
i think the ella would be nice, i've heard many women claim they found their g spot with it. but if not that, i would recommend a simple bullet or egg. a rabbit vibe can be fun but that's more for like a second or third toy kind of thing

Bullets are a nice start. I would have to say Hitachi is to intense for beginner. Bullet or traditional vibe would be my pick. Something in their favorite color and really appealing. Nothing with intense texture. Also would have to say you want something that is not high maintenance to clean for beginner also.
08/25/2011
Thanks for the advice.
04/11/2012
I'd get the iVibe, and then a Hitachi.
09/07/2012
My first toy was a bullet, and it was multi-speed, so you may wanna go with a bullet. Then again that's from my experience, everyones different.

While they aren't the least expensive sex toys, I think it's a well rounded and relatively affordable list for a beginner.

Machina, you can't ask that!! Everyone has different reactions to different things. Some people say you can't beat the Hitachi. Others (like me) swear by the Ella and Xtreme Pack. Others love rabbits. It's impossible!
05/03/2009
It really depends! For anal, clitoral, or vaginal?
05/03/2009
It depends. I suggest the blueberry, it is great for most things.
05/03/2009
They all have their functions as has been said above what type of stimulation do you desire?
05/05/2009
Ella is multi-purpose.
05/20/2009
I say a bullet or a traditional vibe if you are new to toys and are a woman. Consider that they have never used a toy, may not know their body very well, and might not have tried anal stimulation. Your left with a virgin of sorts Ya know?
If they are really really knew I say they get a traditional vibe (if they are interested in penetration) or a bullet. I wouldn't recommend a Hitachi though because they are so strong. It could possibly scare the person away from toys or even bruise her, and that would suck big time. JMO

Ella or the bullet would be the best multi-purpose toys. And if she says, I like it better when it's turned off you go for a dildo. If she doesn't care to have anything inserted, you go for a clit stimulator. If she uses the lowest setting possible go for less buzzy vibes. If she's sad that they aren't powerful, get the hitachi. But those would be good starting points.
02/26/2011
Hands down the Hitachi (but I prefer the Soraya!

Does one toy do the trick, or do you think there is a "no fail" combination of toys?

I went with the Xtreme Pack and Diamond dazzler because I love using a glass toy with the Xtreme Pack. Verrry nice.
05/03/2009
THe blueberry is so strong it might be a bit much with a second vibe. I would use it on the clit with the silk or diamond.
05/03/2009
I would use any vibrator but I opted for the g-spot bullet as well as the Ella. Every time I play with myself is an opportunity to squirt!

Not a woman, so not voting, but some thoughts:
First- material. If you're buying a first sex toy then get one that's durable and safe. You can always use it with (or on) your partner (if/when/if you have one) if you decide it's not your cup of tea.
Second - I'd do multiple categories. Have a "best introductory external toy" for clit/labial/vulvar stimulation and a "best introductory penetrative toy" for insertion.

Anything coupled with the good old reliable Hitachi makes a good starter kit. Throw in a cockring... a nice silicone vibe and some Maximus lube and there'll be skyrockets in sight.
02/26/2011
A part of me really thinks that if someone is nervous the first thing they should try is an inexpensive bullet and the one you picked looks like it would be one at the top of my list. I also think the ella would be good for exploring the G-spot. Not everyone can handle the hitachi and if you're like me, the hitachi won't do much for you just because it provides the wrong kind of stimulation (external) but it's also a staple item of practically every toybox. I'd let those three duke it out.
02/26/2011
I feel like the Ella is a good, nonphallic toy to learn what you like, especially since it has two ends! The cheaper bullet is also good, because it can be used for shallow insertion or for clitoral stimulation! I feel like this combo would be good and cheap!
07/27/2011
ella and the hitachi for sure
