I usually combine things. So if I have three new products to test, I add in at least MiMi or Life nearly every time with the new items. If I'm having trouble with the new stuff, I pull out things I know work for me.

New toys appeal to me for the novelty and excitement factor. Seeing how they work best for me, etc. Besides, all of my old standbys were once new in my collection!

I love getting new toys, but if I could only have one or the other I'd stick with the ones that have already proven themselves time and again. I hope I never need to choose for real, though!

My clit usually needs a few sessions with the toy to make friends. Sometimes I even have difficulty coming with a new toy - lower speeds feel like not enough while higher like too much. After 3 or so separate uses the problem disappears. I don't have this issue when it comes to penetrative toys.
