I am afraid that I am going to get this and be using it and it short out and something happens to me, I guess it would depend if you plugged it in or used batteries with it

Nothing really bad so far. There have been some jolts that were far too extreme for me and I jumped and screamed, but never anything horribly bad.

these are relatively safe to use and often prescribed for physical therapy, the only danger owuld be placing leads across the heart of someone who had a heart condition. anywhere else you're good to go
