We really like rechargeable - but lately I've noticed that the smaller ones like Salsa and Mio don't hold a charge very well. Then there is the issue of throwing away a toy because the batteries have reached end-of-life and are not replaceable.

At the end of the day I'm not sure rechargeable is more planet friendly - so I'd go with the toys that meet my other criteria for size, power, shape, etc.

If we have a choice we always go rechargeable.

I go rechargeable. I'm getting rid of my battery-operated toys.
