Vibrator noise: do you care / do you have a maximum?

Contributor: Philia Philia
I can't deal with noisy vibrators. I used to think that it was just because I didn't want others to hear, but recently I've realized that I just find volume -- or too many different noises/motors on one vibrator -- totally distracting, like I've left the vacuum cleaner on. That made me wonder whether others care about noise, and if so, how much.

So: do loud vibrators bother you? If so, why? Do you have a maximum number of Bees that you find acceptable?

I'm sure I'm not covering all the possibilities below ... gotta love the "other" category.

I don't care about noise at all. I live alone and listen to loud music through headphones when I play. Can't even hear them, myself.

Sometimes I get a little concerned as to whether the neighbors can hear, though...my Hitachi with some of the attachments gets pretty loud and the walls here are pretty thin. But nobody's complained yet.

I did read an article somewhere about it that said something like "if your neighbor seems to intermittently run a jackhammer at 2 o'clock in the morning, chances are she's been enjoying one of these..."

hahaha.

Vibrators that are noisy do distract me. However, if it's a good enough vibrator, I will do my best to ignore it. So I won't not buy something based on a high bee rating. If something is mediocre AND loud, I'll never use it.

Thanks for your responses!

I'm totally ADD, which I think is part of why the noise bothers me.

I have a rabbit that goes "bzzzzzzz" and "BZZZZZZ" and "NEEE-nrrr, NEEE-nrrr" all at the same time, and when I use it, I find myself going "What is that sound like? It's not a construction site ... no, not a construction site ... it's more like a ..." (and of course right now I can't think of what else I've compared it to). But it's just so not conducive to getting off. Though I bet if it worked better for me, it would distract me from trying to find the right metaphor.

Me too Ryuson; dorms with paper thin walls and echo-ie concrete floors.

AHAHA! It's funny that you say that because that's exactly what I do with my rabbits, too! They're so loud!! I always sit there and go "hmm...what heavy machinery is this most comparable to" while it's making those awful noises.

Oh, hallelujah! (See, I knew you'd be a good mentor!) That's what made me think of the distraction thing. But it's not even the volume with my rabbit; it's the strange combination of sounds. I think my rabbit is like a 3 on the actual volume scale, but it's totally out of the park in terms of the aggravation/thinking-o f-metaphors factor.

Oh! I remembered what the other metaphor was -- also totally not sexy unless you're into medical play, and even then maybe not. LIfe support. You hear all the beep-beeps at different times, and then the kind of Darth Vader breathing noises, and the combined effect is beeping and buzzing and pistoning ...

I just loose the mood when I'm thinking about Life Support noises when I'm trying to masturbate, y'know?

Even though vibrator noise doesn't bother us, it's nice when companies make the extra effort to make their vibes powerful AND quiet!

I've got to agree, noisy vibes distract me too much.

We avoid noisy vibrators because they're distracting, not because we're worried that anyone will hear.

I live with my husband, no kids or other house-mates so I don't really care about noise.

Usually doesn't bother me, but some are so loud they sound like putting 1000 forks in the washing machine. My icicles no 16 is so loud it cannot be used! We usually don't have to wrry with others hearing, but the kids are in the house sometimes. Usually the noise being extreme is very annoying.

Noise doesn't really bother me and I am lucky enough to live by myself so I don't have to worry about kids or room mates hearing. I live in a duplex so I try not to use my loudest ones in my bedroom since I am a little bit parinoid about my neighbor hearing, so I will go to the spare room to play occasionally.

I haven't found a vib that is too noisy, yet. We are empty nesters, so no worries there. We often use the vibs together, and I hope that I am distracting her more than the noise.

I live with my parents, and loud things just drive me nuts even when I am alone. Or if I'm with my bf it really distracts him. I try to stick with 1 or 2 bees. If something is 3 bees I will see that as a negative, but can deal with it if the toy is really good, and use it only when I have the house to myself. If something is 4 or 5 bees there's a small chance of me buying it.

I live in an apartment with thin walls, so I don't use loud toys because I don't want the neighbors to hear. I played with a loud toy a couple of times, but the toy wasn't very good, so I switched to something else pretty quickly. I didn't play with it long enough to see if the noise distracted me, but I could see how it could. I don't even like to play music during my play time. I find it easier to focus on my fantasy if it's quiet.

I am fortunate to be in a "I dont care" situation. The stronger and louder the better. I make enough noise using the damn thing you either can't hear it over me or would really have to be lost to not know what was going on even without the vibe noise. I loud with just fingers I guess for that matter.

For the most part, I don't really care. I don't have to worry about anyone hearing. But I don't care for the loud buzzing of some toys just because I don't like the sound myself.

Tend to not care about the noise. I do have upstairs neighbors but I worry about them more when I am the one making the noise over the toys. The advantage of being the landlord is I can pick people that I figure are not have an issue with my liberal ways of living, whether its my loud toys, pagan rituals or the fact that I tend to leave my clothes in the dryer for a few days from time to time.......

Ultimately I don't care I sometimes worry about other hearing but that doesn't stop me from using/buying a vibrator.

I live alone and am not worried about others hearing a vibe; however, the noise annoys me and I prefer quieter toys.

I really like quiet vibrators. We have kids and I don't need them to be hearing my vibrator when My Man and I are having sex, or I'm having some alone time.

The noise bothers me, too. Even my Hitachi bothers me when I'm trying to concentrate, so we use it more for massage than for sex.

I said no more than 2 Bees, but one person's 2 bees is someone else's 3 bees, so it varies. I like when people test the vibrator by turning it on the highest setting, putting in on the bed or dresser and going out into the hall with the door closed to see if you can hear it and report their findings in their reviews. That tells me more than the bees do most of the time.
