What does it mean if a toy is "splashproof"?

Contributor: Gone (LD29) Gone (LD29)
If a toy is listed as being "splashproof" as opposed to "waterproof", what does that mean to you? I know if it's only "splashproof" it shouldn't be submerged, but how much water can it be exposed to? Can it withstand running water in the shower? A constant stream of water in the sink? I've never seen an actual definition posted somewhere, so if one exists please point me in the right direction!

There is conversation about this in a thread that you may be interested in checking out:

Define waterproof?

Here is another thread that may interest you:

What does waterproof mean exactly

Gary says this:

Something like a glass toy is truly waterproof. There is no way for water to get into any part of the toy that will render it unusable. Splashproof means that lube and cleaning are ok, but try not to get the toy too wet.

I agree with sktb0007 bit would also add or can be cleaned with a wet/damp cloth.

Thanks for the info! I actually came across these two threads when I was searching to see if someone had already asked this question, and I guess I'm looking for more of a distinction of the difference between a product officially labelled as "splashproof" on the product page as opposed to a product officially labelled as "waterproof".

I've got several so-called "waterproof" vibrators, and I routinely take them in the shower with me for cleanup or wash them under hot running water in the sink. I don't generally submerge anything in a tub of water.

I'm looking at purchasing something that specifically says it's "splashproof" and I'm wondering what the distinction really is? From the comment of Gary's that you quoted, it sounds like I should treat it like I would treat something that isn't resistant to water at all.

Do any of the reviews of that specific product mention anything about it?? I actually just got a toy that's labelled, "water resistant". The website doesn't say whether or not it can be submerged in water. All it says is that it "can easily be washed in water".

I rarely use toys in the shower or bath but when a toy is listed as "waterproof", I generally submerge the toy in water and test it out. When it comes to "splashproof", I'll clean the toy with a damp wash cloth but that's as wet (with water) as it gets.

The main vibrator I'm looking at is the Fun Factory Ellove. The reviews I've looked at so far actually say that this vibe is 100% waterproof, and that they've used it as such with no issues. The product page, however, only says it's splashproof and my mind keeps wanting to follow the logic that there must be some reason for the distinction. Rationally I know I should probably be more trusting of the practical experience described in the reviews than I am of the base product info, but this one's really bugging me.

Honestly, cleaning a toy with a damp washcloth is how I treat the ones that aren't made to be water resistant at all. I wouldn't feel comfortable using any toy if it hadn't been cleaned thoroughly. So by that logic, I'd hope something splashproof would be able to withstand just a bit more. I'm just trying to figure out how much.

Sorry if I sound like I'm arguing with what you're telling me. I'm really not, I'm just in a bit of disbelief and probably overthinking the whole issue.

In my experience, splashproof generally means that some light contact with water, as in a shower or holding it under a running tap, are all right, while waterproof implies that it can be submerged without coming to harm.

Strictly speaking however, many toys marketed as "waterproof" are actually closer to being splashproof in that they shouldn't be submerged for long. Under the water tends to be the strict domain of high-quality toys, usually rechargable so there's fewer spots for water to get in.

It's really a judgement call, though - it comes down to how much you trust a manufacturer or design. For example, I only submerge toys that are recharable and either charge magnetically (meaning there's no openings whatsoever) or have a way to close or cover the charging port. Otherwise I don't submerge a toy even if it's claimed to be waterproof, though I may take such toys into the shower.

I think Sktb and the others have you covered on this question.

I don't think I have a toy that isn't fully waterproof, so I got lucky, but some toys that are splash proof won't necessarily hold up to being submerged under water (bath tub, hot tub use) but are best for showers.

Oh gosh, you don't sound like you're arguing at all : ) Don't worry! I can totally understand your concern! Like you said in your original post, there really doesn't seem to be a distinct definition of "splash proof", and no one would want to ruin a toy.

I'm not sure if I would really go with what the product page states. Sometimes the information that's posted there is incorrect. For example, the Mystic Wand is a product that I had received for free to review. The product page didn't state anything about it being waterproof or splashproof. The descriptive review on the product page stated that the toy was splash proof but not water proof. Then when I received the toy, the packaging said that it is, "water-resistant for shower or tub". So I was totally confused as to which was correct. I ended up completely submerging the toy in water to see how it performed. In the end, the toy is waterproof. It can be submerged without any problems of performance or water getting into the compartments.

I have no clue but am curious to know what it means

Thanks everyone for the feedback, especially sktb0007 and Rin.

I think I have a better handle on it now, and will likely put more stock in the experiences other users are reporting in their reviews rather than the product page info. If I'm spending that much money on a toy, I just want to be able to do certain things with it like take it in the shower. Better to figure out whether I can do that before I buy it than after!
