HPV Vaccine Approved for Boys and Men

Contributor: LikeSunshineDust LikeSunshineDust
So in October of last year the FDA approved the use of Gardasil, the HPV vaccine, in boys and men ages 9 to 26 for the prevention of genital warts. I thought this was amazing news, but I was disappointed that I found out about it seven months after the fact (and I only found out about it because I'm doing research for a paper on the use of the vaccine in women ages 25-45). I really wanted to share this news with the community just so everyone knows about it.
Here is one news article I found.

Gardasil can protect against not only the two strains that cause 90% of genital warts, but also the two strains that cause 70% of cervical cancer. Giving this vaccine to boys and men would not only meet its indication of preventing genital warts, but it could stop the spread of cervical cancer-related strains to women. We could potentially wipe out a vast majority of HPV and cervical cancer.

That said, to the men out there: will you get vaccinated? And to the parents: will you get your son(s) vaccinated?

If anyone's interested in safety and efficacy studies, I'm sure I can dig something up. I have subscriptions of several medical journals through my school.

Thanks - I have a son starting college soon - we'll get this for him before he goes.

My brother is 20, and I really hope he decides to get it. I told my dad to have the conversation with him.

Yea, they totally need to do more advertising. I just got a notice in my mail box about it, but what about TV ads? I haven't seen any.

Thank you for the post! I plan on talking to my doctor about now, as my son is turning 11 this summer and is in the age range for it.

I decided to get my daughter the Gardasil series after discussing it with our doctor, because the benefits outweigh the risks and my doctor's own daughter had the series of shots. That speaks volumes to me. We've had the same family doctor for 15 years and I trust her completely. She is so practical and honest. I bet my decision will weigh on whether her teen son has gotten the shots yet

I'll let you know what I hear. My daughter has her annual physical tomorrow actually, so I can ask!
