Highly Fluctuating Libido

Contributor: (Re)tired Stripper (Re)tired Stripper
I'm really odd in that my libido fluctuates WILDLY--and it doesn't go in time with my cycle (I'm on LoEstrin 24 and don't even get a period, either), stress, sleep, or any other discernible factor.

Sometimes when I am sick in bed, my sex drive is the highest. Maybe because I have nothing else to do? I am prone to stress (I have kidney and adrenal gland problems). I'm in my 20s, but my hormones are wonky as hell. I did a saliva hormone panel and my progesterone is low but my testosterone seems ok...confusing. Traditional doctors have been of no help, though my ND is trying to work with me. My gyno has NOT HELPED AT ALL--she even went so far as to insist Wellbutrin was the same as Prozac and not a different type of drugs at all and bombarded me with phallacies until we had a miniature fight. It was sad. Oh and I'm not on the Wellbutrin now; that was for Seasonal Affective Disorder. I do take Klonopin (a sedative) as needed for anxiety, but it's never done anything to my libido.

So we have a lot going on here. I take fish oil via Nordic Naturals. I hate to 'cause I'm a vegetarian but it helps a lot my physical issues. I also do cal/mag/zinc and lots of other supplements. I don't do much caffeine or alcohol and I don't smoke.

For awhile, I played with maca and goat weed. Maca breaks me out HORRIBLY. Goat weed is ok, but honestly?

NOTHING seems to change my drive--it's either so low I'd rather do ANYTHING else than have sex, or it's so intense I can't think straight.

Is anyone else like that? I'd love a libido in the middle, with natural fluctuations that aren't so dramatic. It's frustrating in those dry times and really distracting in the super-overdrive times. And I don't have bipolar or anything like that, it's not hypomania or similar. And it's not my partner. And I've never had it before.

Just wondering if anyone had advice or similar experiences...

I'm the same way! I'm not taking any birth control or other meds though. However, I don't handle stress all that well so that is probably one of the biggest problems effecting my drive. You said you have tried a couple of different herbs. I like to go the natural route whenever possible and a few months ago I found a tea that seems to help. Its called Get Passionate by Republic of Tea. It has muira puama bark and ashwagandha root in it. I've found that you can take Ashwagandha in a pill form too but have read that it needs to be heated up to get the same effect. For me it really does help if I drink it every day. If you do try it I would suggest mixing it with another tea like peppermint. It doesn't taste all that good :p

My wife's libido varies widely as well - but as she's gotten older (mid 40s) it's evening out and gladly a little stronger than it once was.

Thanks for responding! It's been a real monkey on my back lately...

Gunsmoke, I kind of figured the female sex drive tends to stabilize with the years. I guess I have something to look forward to in the next couple decades

Remigirl, thank you so much for the tip! I take Ashwagandha infrequently, because frankly, yeah...it's disgusting. And I have a high tolerance for gross-tasting/bitter things. I love the Republic of Tea but I've never seen that particular blend--I will try it next. I, too, prefer the natural route. I'm down to just birth control pills. I console myself with the fact that they are the lowest approved dose, but I do know deep down the hormones are screwing with my body. One day I'll get brave, drink my red raspberry tea, ditch the pills and hope the cramps don't knock me down!

But, yeah, thank you. I'll report back if the tea has any effect De-stressing and exercise are helpful too, but life does get in the way.

Sometimes I really wish I could experience life as a guy for a day or two--all that powerful, rushing testosterone.

There are a lot of possible and likely factors for me, but I also have experienced a very fluctuating libido!! It used to be a lot worse the last couple years than it has been more recently, but there isn't anything in particular I changed other than being a little more healthy, both physically and relationship-wise.

Mine fluctuates as well, but not that extreme. I take L-arginine which is "supposed to help with like blood flow" but I might look into some of the natural suggestions mentioned. Thanks everyone.

um, i don't know if i can actually offer this, but it does make a difference when we we're in one of those funks where neither of us feels too sexy. Try just regular marijuana, and if you live in a state where its medically available, they will prescribe it for libido issues. It can help wonders, and get you back on track to good fun sex!
