"Herpesviruses isolated from patients with oral lesions were found to survive for as long as two hours on skin, three hours on cloth, and four hours on plastic."

Yeah. That's why they tell you not to touch the sores, to disinfect your hands immediately after touching when you do, as well as anything you may have touched in between, and to touch as little else as possible in between, and to wash all clothes, towels and sheets that may have come into contact with the sores or any other part of your body that came in contact with the sores.
