Anyone gotten pregnant with an IUD?

Contributor: ToyGurl ToyGurl
I just took a pregnancy test the other day and it came out positive. I got a little excited, and a little shocked...

I got an IUD placed about 3 or 4 months ago, so this is a shock to me. My doctor said that I can't go through with the pregnancy, and that I will lose it as soon as he removes the IUD. I'm just very upset that this form of birth control didn't work so well for me.

Has anyone else gotten pregnant with an IUD?

Is your doctor absolutely sure? You may want to get a second or a third opinion on the matter if you want to go through with the pregnancy if possible. There have been accounts of women getting pregnant with an IUD and some give birth to healthy babies. I don't know you as well as your doctor might, but when it comes to this I say "never say never."

I have Paragard and I have not gotten pregnant on it as of yet.

I never did an IUD before, but did read about people getting pregnant and some scary stuff happens sometimes. Maybe by chance you will not misscarry are you having it removed?

Well the way the egg is placed, it will come up when he pulls out the IUD. I have 3 OB/GYNs who came in and met with me because I had been crying. They all said sorry and agreed that this would happen. It's upsetting, and I know it isn't my fault... It just hurts.

I am so sorry about this, I know what it is like to have a miscarriage. I had one with my first pregnancy. It was so upsetting. Sending you hugs.

My doctors said it needs to be removed if it wasn't working for me. It could be defective as far as the hormones or the design. One of the OB/GYN's said that sometimes they are faulty and the doctors can't tell upon insertion. He also noticed that it shifted slightly, so it would be dangerous to leave it in.

The IUD are most likely too new to have a Dr that has a specialty in removing them during pregnancy huh?

Well my doctor is a great guy. I don't blame this on him at all. Maybe it was my fault for getting one of these to begin with. It just seems to have shifted. We even pulled up the images of when it was placed, and now, and it has shifted quite a lot. I can't imagine why it would have shifted. Blegh...

It is not your fault you had no idea. It is weird that it shifted so much. I wonder why that happened, something like that does not seem very safe if it runs a risk of shifting and miscarriage if you are pregnant.

I'm going to get this thing out but I don't know about trying again. I wasn't supposed to get pregnant, because I have Epilepsy and the meds are unsafe. Maybe it is meant to be... I just feel like trying because I feel like I need to replace something :/

I have a friend who has a one year old and she has epilepsy also, they just monitored the baby more often and she had higher risks of having things like cleft plate and other deformities. But her baby is healthy and adorable.

I know what you mean about replacing. I felt that way, but it happens for a reason and that reason maybe that the next one is your special baby. I know I feel that way about my first born, if I would not of miscarried. I would not have him.

good grief. thank you so much for posting this.

i spoke recently with my docs for the hundredth time about IUDs and expressed my concerns. they said oh of course you're only going to hear the BAD information about IUD's when you're researching them. they were trying to debunk all the horror stories.

i just don't believe this has been tested enough to be safe. i've heard too many stories, many far worse than this, if you can imagine. emergency surgery having to be performed due to the wires and the device poking through uterine walls, infections, etc.

count me out, IUD.

so sorry this happened to you.

First of all I'm so sorry that this happened to you. My best friend had two similar incidents and is never using an IUD again because of it.

She became pregnant while she had her IUD, and then once it had been removed a few days later she became pregnant. both times she lost it. The removal of the IUD basically tricked her body into thinking that she was giving birth and so it rejected her pregnancy a couple of months in. When she had the IUD in, they had to remove it because she had complications shortly after she found out she was pregnant, and when they removed it she lost the baby.

So this CAN happen, though she's the only of my several friends with an IUD who this has happened to.

Exactly. All they tell you is the good stuff when you're getting it put in. I had posted a while back asking if anyone knew info on it because they hardly gave me any upon putting it in. I had a different doctor do it (not a very good one) and he gave me a brief overview, and a pamphlet, and then it was done.

I knew nothing, I was confused, and I was almost regretting what I had gotten into. Now I'm regretting it for sure. Thank you for the concern, everyone.

A friend of mine just had the same thing happen, the doctor said she might lose the child if they remove it, but she did not. She's been using the IUD successfully for over a year with no problems till now.
No birth control method is 100%, there are always exceptions. Hell even when men get a vasectomy they can still knock someone up, depending on how it is done.

Wow. I knew that it wouldn't be 100%, but it seems like the more I talk to people, the more people they hear of getting pregnant with this thing. It almost seems like the pill was a better choice...

Hell, I called my mum today and she knows more than 5 women this has happened to. You'd think working at a women's health center, I would have come across hearing of this.

I've had many more friends and people I know get pregnant while on the pill than with an IUD. I think the best was to go is using 2 methods, just to be sure. Pain in the ass, but worth it to reduce the chance of accidental pregnancies.

I'm so sorry that you've gone through this. Honestly, for next time, your best bet is to rely on two different methods, as someone mentioned before. There are horror stories with almost every kind of birth control imagined. Accidents do happen, after all.
