Birth control question! Nervous about getting knocked up >.>

Contributor: emiliaa emiliaa
Yeah, I've just started taking birth control, I started the Sunday after my period although my period started on a Monday so it was over by then. Been having some breakthrough bleeding, which I was told is normal, but after about a week or two my boyfriend and I tried to have unprotected sex--he pulled out , wayyy before climax, but there still COULD have been pre-cum, as always. I was under the impression that it was totally safe (in terms of pregnancy) to have unprotected sex after a week of taking the pill--or in some cases even immediately. But then I asked a nurse over the phone when asking about my bleeding, and she said to wait a month --eek! So I'm curious what my chances are of being pregnant, and how will I know since my periods are irregular and another might not come for a month or more?

A month is usually the wait time before its safe for unprotected sex after starting birth control. Ive only
heard of minerva being ok immediately and thats not a pill.

Though if it was just for like...a few thrusts, and no climax, do you think I will be alright? I mean, some people use the pull out method ALONE and never get pregnant (psycho/stupid idea to me) so I would hope I'm alright.

I started the pill (Mononessa) in June and my gynecologist said it would be effective immediately.

i've been using the coitus interuptus method for years, no other form of BC, and never gotten prego.

relax, all is (90% likely to be) okay.

I wouldn't rely on the birth control pill alone to prevent pregnancy unless you are like 100% consistent on the time of day you take it. I was on it and we have a little (well not little anymore) 13 year old running around. My times varied by a few hours (and the occasional missed day) and since everyone is different, I'm not trying to freak you out. Just want you to make sure and remember that nothing is totally safe!

To answer your question though, you should be able to call the pharmacy and ask to speak with a pharmacist about it. Our pharmacist does consultations like that over the phone, so I'd assume most do. Chances are that you're fine, but I'd call your doctor and ask how long you should use backup.

I know that my birth control instructions say that if you start the pill within 5 days of your period it should be effective immediately, but if you start it at any other time you will be protected from pregnancy after 7 days. All 4 pills I have taken so far have said the same thing so I imagine most pills are pretty similar. It sounds like you should be fine.

Thanks for your answers guys. Forgot to mention I take it between 2:30-3 every day, religiously, and I have not missed a pill and would plan on using backup if I ever did. I'm pretty much well informed on the whole thing, just ...paranoid as SHIT. Haha. I guess what I'll do is wait until a month just to be super safe and then have a blast ;D

Working in the medical profession I can tell you that although any of these answers could be correct, it depends on what type of birth control you are using.

As for the "pull out method", those who use it and don't get pregnant are lucky, considering the precum typically contains the most amount of sperm and is impossible to avoid being inside of you during sex. The cum after orgasm does carry sperm, but it's what happens BEFORE orgasm that gets women pregnant. It is absolutely NOT a method of birth control whatsoever and should NEVER ever under ANY circumstances be used as such.

Yeah generally it's a month but I actually had unprotected sex like.. right after i started and I didn't get pregnant. They generally say staring it the sunday of your period or something to that effect will make it active quicker but the rule is a month.

I wouldn't freak out completely just watch for symptoms and such.
