Birth control, Two Periods, and starting a new pill pack.

Contributor: Miss Anonymous Miss Anonymous
Okay, so I have a question..

I'm currently on the pill and have been on it for a while now and during moving I lost my last prescription. I was on the last week of the 2nd pill pack before I realized I had lost the 3rd pill pack. I tried to get a prescription refill before I had to start a new pack and I couldn't get one right away. I already had a period at the end of the second pill pack (during the placebo week) and now almost two weeks later (still not on BC) my period has started again.

I contacted the pharmacy today and they said my medical agreed to cover the lost prescription. I've now been off birth control for about two weeks. BUT! A second period has started randomly, it started last night. This is my second period in 3 weeks.

Question one : Is this normal?

Question two: I am going to get my refill today,(replacement of the 3rd missing pill pack) and I was wondering should I just start it today when I get it or wait till this "period" ends?

I called the nurse line but she was no help.

I'm not worried about being pregnant at all.

What do you guys think?

I hope this all makes sense...

Whenever you're on hormone therapy and you stop cold-turkey like that your system will get messed up, so YES it's expected to have irregular periods. You also might continue to have wonky cycles for a few months into your new pack while your body balances out again.

As for when to start your cycle... Can you tell if you ovulated right before you started this 'period'? That will help you determine if it's real 'menstruation' or not. If you don't think that you're bleeding because you released an egg, I think that you would be fine to start tomorrow (if you're a Sunday starter) but if you think that you did ovulate I might wait until you're done bleeding. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

Your hormones are probably just a little confused right now. Almost everyone menstruates 11 days after you ovulate. Stopping the pill after your placebo week must have triggered an ovulation, resulting in a super short menstrual cycle.

I recommend you do a day-one start today and be immediately protected.

Yes that is normal. Your periods can become irregular after you stop taking the pill. I would recommend starting your new pack tomorrow. Which is the Sunday Start. You will want to use a back up method for birth contrl for the next week.

Totally normal. Once you're regulated, it'll fix itself. Same thing happened to me too!

Ryuson, you helped a whole bunch. To be honest, I don't know when I'm ovulating. I've never paid attention to that at all. Well I looked up signs but I haven't had none of them.

Okay, this is going to be a little gross and hopefully I don't gross someone out.

But Yesterday when it started, it was like brown, deep brown blood. It looked almost like old period blood, but this morning when I woke up it was normal and bright red.

So I have NO idea if that's period blood or just my body acting funny.

That's what I was thinking about doing.
Because I know you can either start Sunday or day one. If I start day one will this make the current period stop?

It might cut it short, but it won't likely stop your period right away. Even your next one might be a little messed up.

Ahhh monkey balls!

I Just want it to STOP!
I hate having my period. I feel it's so pointless if your no trying to have a baby!..

I'm probably going to start it tomorrow.
How long do you think it will take for everything to go back to normal. I remember once not long ago. I tried to skip my period by skipping the placebo pills and just starting a new pill pack right away... Worst mistake of my life... I had my period for a whole MONTH!

I'm just so scared that's going to happen again.

I didn't know it took affect in seven days...
I always gave it 30 days. I've never asked because when I was 17 and first started the doctor told me to use back up protection for 30days. ha!

The one time I day-one started it resulted in a very long yet very light period (8 days for me) but were otherwise normal. My periods are always more brownish when I'm on birth control, too.

If you take it BEFORE you ovulate that month, and you don't ovulate during the first 7 days, you can stop using back up methods in a week. If you ovulate before you start the pills, or during the first week when you're building the hormones back up, you'll need to wait 30 days. They usually say 30 days to be safe (and because, like you've said, it's pretty hard for some ladies to know when they ovulate.)

Personally I wouldn't risk it, but you SHOULD be fine after a week.

Yep! This is it. I read my birth control paperwork like crazy. It tells you that if you start taking your pill the after you start your period...after 7 days, you are good.
