Bleed me, Baby! -mensturation woes abound-

Why is there not a health class for the period/menstruation?

I have a rather weird menstruation, it flows heavy for three days, then stops completely for a day, then starts normally again for a last 24 hour hurrah.

I've had my own adventure finding what I liked to use to cover my 'shame'
and I'm tired of tampon and pad companies blue liquid and pastel pinks and greens.

It's not a dirty secret, it's not a murder in my panties, it's a one-color rainbow shooting out of my vulva to bless a select few lucky plants and the surrounding dirt of my choice.

here's my overview of all the stuff I've tried:

---disposable pads---

I used to use these all the time.
I'd buy the maxi-hyper-overnighter s and
just wear them until I felt like changing.
I stained sheets, pillows, shirts and a
small fortune's worth of panties.
pads would sweat and roam around, but
I preferred them to 'invasive' tampons.

I would fill our bathroom's small trashcan
in four days, and stuff the bag in the outside
can on the last day. I had to buy new pads every
month at 7 or 8 bucks per large, squishy, pink cube.

---disposable tampons---

I tried tampons, and immediately disliked them, I couldn't insert them without touching myself, despite what the directions said- and once inside they were uncomfortable and often leaked worse than the pads, only they came standard with a near-paranoid fear of toxic shock syndrome.

---cloth pads---

One cloth pad and I was hooked, the brand I bought was called 'Party in my Pants' it made me giggle and was made of a soft flannel with little skulls on it. it was freaky, because it was almost like free-bleeding- but without the stain. I wrung it out and set it to dry, immediately upset that I only bought one. This is what I use now, along with the Divacup on the first day or so.

---silicone cup---

I got a Divacup, a silicone cup with a stem you insert to collect blood, and take out to empty at your leisure. The first day it was amazing, and I got used to taking it in and out. The third day I learned that they can and will overflow, but you can tell when they are about to, and even then they don't spill much, my second period with the divacup it started to make me a sore on the last day, so I left it out and was okay, going back to my pads.
now I use it for the first day or two, then switch to cloth pads.

Well I use tampons and since my second child was born I have been ridiculously heavy! So I looked for an alternative, in which I found the "divacup", but it's the disposable ones. At less than $6 a pack that will last me a period I thought, heck I'm actually saving money compared to the two boxes I buy of tampons that run about $7-$8 a pack. I'm so heavy that I go through two boxes a month. So it's the disposable cups for me all the way. Though I do use an occasional tampon here and there, and of course the pantie liner. Oh, for anyone interested in knowing what the disposable ones are called, it's instead, and you can get them at Walmart for $2.00 cheaper than a specialty store like Walgreens.

I use to use pads when I was younger and HATE that feeling of something "falling" out of me everytime I stand up! YUCK!

I use a diva cup and I love it. I also love cloth pads, but I don't use them as much mainly because I'm just too lazy and have enough laundry to do as it is. The diva cup is easy enough to wash off between uses and then boil once my period is over. I have the same type of period though..heavy three days, nothing for one day and then one more day of light to moderate flow. The last day I will put on a pad instead of using the cup, either cloth or disposable..depending on my laziness factor that day lol. I also sometimes will use a pad if my cramps are really bad because sometimes the last thing I want to do is stick something up my vagina...even if that something is there to collect the blood.

I have to say though I have always like pad/tampon commercials and their blue liquid. No it's not realistic but I guess I just like the blue. I've also always liked the blue liquid in diaper commercials, I think it's funny and it's pretty! HAHA

The Diva Cups freak me out. Really bad. Like I actually just said "ew!" out loud.

When I had heavy periods I would stick to pads or tampons. TSS never worried me because a normal person takes a tampon out every few hours. You're only really risking TSS if you leave a tampon in for like a day or two, which is nasty. I use tampons if I'm venturing outside of the house. If not, I wear pads. they don't bother me a bit. Lately because my periods are so light I can just wear a panty liner. Hooray.

Those new Kotex ads are busting through the pink and purple pad ads that we've all grown up with. They're spunky.

I use tampons. Diva Cups seem kind of interesting, but a bit of a hassle. What do you do if you're in a public washroom? I get heavy and irregular periods and bad cramps. Birth control pills seem to be helping a bit though.

I agree with Blinker on the TSS issue. As long as you are changing your tampons every few hours you are fine.

I have been looking into a cup. I have been reading alot about them and I think I will give it a try. People who use them swear by them. I think I might try the MiaCup.

I use cloth pads and tampons when I go to bed.

I tried using the Diva Cup, but since I have a tilted uterus, it never stays in right.

Before I went on the pill I had an extremely heavy 1st, second, and 3rd day and I never knew when I would get my period. I soaked through my school uniforms, always stained my sheets and one time I even went through 4 heavy pads and a tampon in less than 2 hours at a college orientation! I ended up ruining one of their chairs during this heavy bleed. Luckily that never happened again.

Now on the pill my periods have regulated and they are much lighter! So I now only use tampons, pads feel like diapers to me and always leak when I lie down.

I use and LOVE my Diva Cup. I'm never going back to tampons or pads!
I save a heap of money and waste with using the cup. Plus I feel much fresher than using pads.

I just couldn't sleep properly wearing a pad over night. I felt awkward.
I also found that made my moods worse cause I would get so bitchy and frustrated at the bulk in my panties....lol.
I didn't like the drying out feel of tampons (with them absorbing EVERYTHING - I know thats what they are for but I always felt very dry even after my period was done).

I hated pads. So. Bad.

I hate most tampons. Especially those cheap fuckers with the cardboard applicator. (*#^$!!)

I was relatively happy with o.b., but then the entire line mysteriously disappeared on really short notice, and I've only half a box left. Bollocks, they were cheap at 7-8$ for a box of 40, they grew widthwise and not lengthwise, and it was PROPORTIONAL(!!!!!) growth.

I -had- a mooncup, but it met with an unfortunate accident and died.

I has the worst-period luck.

At least I don't bleed while I'm asleep.

I have been using cloth pads for the last 2 years or so. My favorites are from "Talulah Bean". They are minky topped and oh so soft

I don't have a period anymore. I started taking a shot 7 years ago that lightened it, but finally stopped it altogether to help my endometriosis. It's made a huge difference. I had extremely heavy periods and would go through sometimes 3 boxes of tampons in one, viscious 2 week long period! Ugh. I never used pads. The feeling disgusted me. After the endo got worse, I had more and more pain with anything inside there even a tampon, but there was no way I was going to sit in my liter of blood and let it just smear all over me. That is just not the feeling I like and I really don't like blood all over my ass. I rarely was able to even attend school on the weeks of my periods so I'm more than glad they're over with. I will hopefully never experience another one. I will have to go for a hysterectomy within the next few years anyways, or sooner if I choose, but I don't. I still have pretty intense (sometimes debilitating) cramps and period "symptoms." I usually get "contractions" is what they're called. It's similar to the pain that happens during a miscarriage. My symptoms are much lighter, but they're still there and I hate it. But I am thankful it isn't half as bad as it was before!
