Boric acid to treat infections?

Contributor: mistressg mistressg
I am very infection prone and have been getting yeast and B.V. infections every few months or weeks for the past 4 years or so. I have pretty much every medication, wearing cotton underwear exclusively, eating organic yogurt, taking probiotic supplements and folic acid, showers instead of baths, switched to silicone toys exclusively, cleaning toys with hydrogen peroxide, using lubricants that only contain safe ingredients (and using them rarely). I'm not diabetic, I'm not anemic, they can't figure out why this keeps happening. I have tried everything. It is very depressing and expensive.

Recently, it was suggested to me during yet another visit to a doctor that I try boric acid suppositories. She said she was discussing my problem with a doctor colleague of her's who works at Planned Parenthood. She told her that she has seen this sort of thing before and a local homeopathic person makes boric acid suppositories and they seem to have been very effective on the women who have used them to treat their chronic yeast/b.v. infections.

I have read about boric acid treatment in my hunting for a cure online, but it sounds scary! Boric acid is in roach killer! I just don't see how that could possibly be safe to put in my body!

My question is, have you heard of this before? Did you or someone you know try this? Was it effective? Good idea, bad idea? What should I do?!
Is there any other treatment out there that will end this?

No, I have not heard of that before and probably for a good reason. Many women get chronic infections because they have problems with a low pH not a high pH. Putting an acid in the rectum will cause a rapid decrease in lower intestinal and blood pH. Of course, this is assuming that the boric acid suppository is dilute enough not to burn away the lining of your rectum (it is an acid after all). If you're having trouble with yeast infections, I would not recommend an acid suppository. Please get another opinion from an experienced gynecologist.

Have you tried peroxide, tea tree oil, garlic cloves, etc to treat the infections? I know BV is much more complicated than yeast infection alone, but I've written articles on how to rid them with just those things I listed above! I've also gotten rid of yeast infections by using them. I've never had to see a dr or use any OTC stuff. I've always had immediate relief using those methods. After writing articles (all based on my very own experience too!) and telling others, I've had several ladies say that it actually worked. One had been dealing with SUCH severe yeast infections that she said it really felt impossible to ever be rid of them. We talked and I told her to try some of the concoctions and she told me that it worked! I have no clue about boric acid, but If you haven't tried those I mentioned and want to, let me know and I'll be glad to give you the details/instructions on how to go about it. Best of luck!

The Boric Acid toxicology info on Wikipedia mentions: "May damage fertility. May damage the unborn child." I think it's better if you try Kendra's suggestions instead, and you can also consider Aloe Vera gels.

It would be a vaginal suppository.

Please message me any suggestions you have, because this is just impossible.

Also, a yeast infection and b.v. do not mean low pH, one is low, one is high. It's complicated and annoying. At this point we're trying to figure out why I am so infection prone/what could be wrong with my immune system.

Kendra, Could you please message me too? My sister is having horrible problems with constant yeast infections. As soon as it clears up with a prescription treatment, it's back again.

Specially prepared boric acid suppositories were used years ago, before common antibiotics and yeast creams were invented. I wouldn't use them during pregnancy, but under the care of your doctor, especially if you've tried everything else, and nothing works, is worth a try.

I remember seeing a bottle of boric acid for douches for women with BV at the beginning of my career in a hospital pharmacy. They also used to sell this in pharmacies. It's usually buffered, so if properly prepared, it will NOT burn you.

Has your partner been tested, though? Sometimes a partner is a silent carrier and can give you infections from their genitals or mouth without having any symptoms.

But, I'd talk to your doc and the compounding pharmacist (this is actually NOT a "homeopathic" ; preparation, it's an old fashioned chemical cure) and see if it works.

It's not the same preparation or concentration used as ant and roach poison (and one of the reasons boric acid is used by families with children and dogs is it's lack of toxicity at low levels.)

Here's a good link about this treatment.

Thank you for this. P'Gell, I love that you are a member of this site! Really. So much great health care insight!

It still sounds kind of scary to me though. Have you heard of women this has worked for? Or that it has gone horribly wrong for? Is there anything else, or is this my final option? Is there any way it could make things worse, or make me infertile?

Also, I do not believe it is my partner's fault. I had been worried about this when it first start because it seemed to have started after I got with my ex. He had never been with anyone before. After a few months, he went to the doctor, had no symptoms and was treated anyway. I continued getting infections. It has continued with my current partner. Plus, this time around I had no had any sort of sexual contact for a month or so, so it had nothing to do with him. I had, however, been using my silicone vibrator. I've been cleaning it with soap and water as often as possible, and also using hydrogen peroxide on it after each use.

Aloe Vera prevents and treats candida (yeast) infections. Including the juice in your diet will balance bacteria in the body and keep yeast organism in check, and applying gel to the infected area will help cure the infection.

Really? I had not heard about aloe vera before. I am willing to try that, but I need more suggestions as well. I will do whatever can prevent b.v. and yeast, but with the results I've gotten, I don't expect that aloe would be a cure-all. Thank you.
