Damiana = miracle women's herb!

Contributor: Dawn (Lilac Distraction) Dawn (Lilac Distraction)
I was looking for something to boost my unusually low libido. I stumbled across Damiana while at work. I was looking at the active ingredients in our female enhancement pills. I went out and got a bottle. (about $10 for 100 capsules)

I gave the stuff a try and it has done way more than I had expected it to!

It has been traditionally used for increasing libido, treating anxiety and depression, as a laxative, and it helps promote energy.

The first time I took it, I felt the effects! I was in the middle of irritable, mood-swingy, painful PMS. After I took the first dose, I felt much calmer, and less like a crazy PMS monster. My libido was a bit higher, and sex just seemed more satisfying.

After taking it for about a week, it made my PMS disappear! No more sore boobs, no irritability and crankiness. I usually get THE WORST cramps right before my period starts. It happens every single time. However, this time, there were none. Not even a trace.

It also has a gentle laxative effect. I have IBS, and my habits are all over the place, but this stuff worked well for that, too.

This stuff has helped me out SO much. I believe it's worth looking into for any of you who need help with PMS and libido.

Thanks for that information.
I went off the depo about 18 months ago. It took 8 or so months to get my period back, and the last 4 months have been real hell during my period. Massive, can not move cramps...they get so bad I have told my husband I'd buy the first needle on the street corner of someone selling depo! lol I will definitely be trying this. My youngest daughter has the same symptoms.
thanks again

I got it at a health store, yes. They also had it in a liquid extract, but I got the pills because they were more convenient.

"The testoterogenic (promotes testosterone) properties are what help men with sexual dysfunction. It may also help women who suffer from severe pain during menstruation and even menstrual headaches. This is because raising the testoterone slightly in women will cause the body to lower estrogen which causes severe cramps and migraines during the periods. "

What are the ingredients? It's not this damiana, is it? Or I imagine there are added things to what you're taking?
The only damiana I know of is the leaf/herb stuff, but that's always been an old wives tale.

I've used it and have found studies that have shown that it does have an effective use in increasing sexual activity in rats. They haven't done much study on human use.

All I know is that taking it for about a week somehow made my cramps I get every single month disappear.

Let's just say I was always a major skeptic regarding herbal remedies and always scoffed at the claims. But after taking a hand-blended concoction of herbs that my husband has been making for me over the past several months (of which damiana is one), my cramps have completely disappeared---and I used to get some very, very debilitating cramps. Though my libido was never exactly low, it has increased over the past few months. But what I like best about taking the blend (second only to the fact that my cramps no longer make a monthly appearance) is that my natural lubrication has increased in spades. I was reluctant for a very, very long time to attribute these changes to the blend of herbs my husband was coaxing me to take.

I've looked up information on the ingredients on PubMed, but I was disappointed by the paucity of studies. Researchers must get grant money from somewhere to keep going, so the research is, too often, where the money is. There are researchers who will occasionally do an herbal study, but to keep in business, they need to direct most of their attention elsewhere. (Sadly, since herbs are comparatively cheap, any "big discovery" about an herb would not be nearly as financially lucrative; thus, who is going to fund the research? Running a research lab is quite expensive.)

Though the research is limited, many herbs are known to have beneficial antioxidants. The saddest aspect about the minimal amount of research is the fact that there are still plenty of components that have yet to be identified in many herbs, yet these components could play a hugely beneficial role in medicine.

Returning to my skepticism, I had wondered if perhaps my cramps have been eliminated due to some other reason, but I am currently on my period (sorry if that is TMI), and I have been entirely too busy and distracted to take the concoction the past few days. After going without cramps for months, I was surprised to find myself experiencing them again last night. But I took the blend of herbs, and they went away shortly thereafter. (I used to take a couple of Tylenol tablets and spend the night with a heating pad pressed against my abdomen, unable to sleep from the pain.)

My husband takes the blend he makes as well, and he has even experienced benefits in terms of increased number of erections, hardness, and pre-ejaculate and ejaculate production.

As with anything, I say take everything you hear with a grain of salt and be cautious about anything you try---but don't necessarily dismiss it out of hand. If there are no (known) negative or dangerous side effects, some things are definitely worth giving a try.

I'm glad you had such a similar reaction! Now I know it's not just me!

I've tried a lot of other herbal supplements for things like anxiety and menstrual problems. Kava kava works wonders for relaxation and helped me calm my silly airport anxiety.
