Does anyone know where I can go to get "lady" help?

I'm 22 years old and I've been sexually active for over a year now. Well, I lost my virginity a little over a year ago. Technically, I've had "relations" for a year or so before that. But I digress.

I have never been to a gynecologist. Ever. The closest thing I've done was go to a doctor to get an ultra sound to see if I had ovarian cysts and they didn't check me "down there" because I was menstruating at the time (or maybe I just didn't let them. I can't remember. I was embarrassed).

I know I should go. I know I really need to. But I don't have the money. I am NOT going to have the money for years and years to come, IF I ever do. I can't go to the doctor for horrible sickness and I definitely can't go for my lady parts. So what should I do?

Is there anywhere that can help me? I likely won't be able to pay a dime. There's more important things we need to spend money on and we often only have $10 or so to last us a week. Is there anywhere that gives free exams? Is there anything I can do myself to make sure I'm healthy?

Do you have a department of public health in your county? It's where I've been going for years because I never made enough money or had medical benefits - and I'm currently unemployed, but I'm still in the system, and even got my tubes tied recently.

They've actually gotten better than they used to be, so you may want to look into that. You'll have to prove your income and such, but they're good about taking people without insurance. The family planning clinic of the public health department is where you need to inquire. Just call their main office (their number should be in the county government section of your phone book) and they'll get you started.

And if I have no income? I'm not married so my boyfriend's income isn't technically my income.

I'm not sure if we have a department like that or not. We probably do? If they're common, I mean. If they're not common, then no. I'm sure we don't. I live in an INCREDIBLY rural area where all the "towns" are villages so, yeah. We don't have a lot of modern conveniences, it seems.

I have no income, either. My college is being paid by the board of education. I'm living with my mother who's on disability. Yeah, rolling in dough. XP

Anyway, even rural areas should have a county health department. Just look and see and ask. Visit the county seat's government building and inquire there.

I'm broke as shit and I go to my local health department as well, and I get free testing, pap smears, and Depo shot. My school doesn't pay for it, but my income is so low, that based on their sliding scale, I qualify for free care. I live in an incredibly rural part, so it's nice that I don't pay a dime.

The fact that you haven't had a pap is somewhat concerning, especially if you're sexually active. Google does exist and you can find out where your local dept is located. Tell them your address and call them about their services.

You can also go to Planned Parenthood as well. They also operate on a sliding scale and you can get all your lady procedures done there. Again, google the location and call them.

Don't think about gambling your health and just call! Seriously, these people are paid to make sure that you're healthy, no matter where you go.

google planned parenthood, an american-based organization geared towards the sexual health of young women who also treats men, that provides healthcare at a sliding scale. there may be one in your area.

a local health department is also a great low-cost option.

either way, there are payment plans. even if you don't have money, you can pay $5 a month to get a doctor's bill taken care of. doctor's offices will work with you, they have to.

nothing is worth more than your health. it is worth the cost. trust me!

if you absolutely can't find anything other than a real doctor, though it's not the best idea, it's still an option: do what i've done when i've been totally broke and had to go to the ER. just go. and dont pay the bill. if you cant' pay it, you cant freaking pay it. the doctor will be the same way. you'll get a shit ton of calls for a long time. but dodging collectors isn't the hardest thing in the world to do. yeah my credit's shit. but i've been poor and desperate for healthcare before. it doesn't really bother me.

at least i got my health back on track. thats what really matters.

Trust me. I know it's concerning. I worry about myself all the time, especially considering I've had a history of ovarian cysts (or what we believe to be them). I would often get pains down there and I believe they've exploded before, such as the time I was on the bus in high school and burst into tears because of the sudden terrible pain after having days of lesser pain. I was supposed to get birth control to help control them right before the government took my insurance away because I was 18 and no longer important. Thankfully, I haven't really had them since then. I could really have used (and can use) that birth control, though.

@ aliceinthehole: I know about the whole ER thing, trust me. I have panic attacks that sometimes result in actual physical pain. A few years ago, I was going through a particularly bad time in my life and the pain in my chest spread farther through my body to the point where I could not even breathe properly, let alone move. I literally had to be lifted up from lying down positions and walked everywhere because I could not move. Despite my begging my sister not to call because I couldn't afford it, she did and so now I've got a $900 ambulance bill that has hardly been whittled down, on top of the hospital bills. Not to mention, the various hospital and emergency room bills when I had a combination of strep throat and mono and I couldn't eat or breathe anymore (I lost, like, seven pounds in a few days). No one could tell me what was wrong with me or fix it so I had to go to three different places.

I live in the south in the US and the Department of Health and Human services are very common. I'd check into that. Where I live, it's where you can get WIC if you're pregnant/nursing, get free medical care, shots, pregnancy tests, birth control, etc.

Did you check to see if there is a Planned Parenthood anywhere near you? I go to the one in my area, and they are really good about helping people in tough financial situations. I'm actually covered on my mom's insurance when I go, but they have a scale that they use to determine prices for people who are uninsured. I think you need your latest pay stub and maybe some other info to see if your eligible, but you should definitely look into it. Their website is plannedparenthood.org.

Like a few of the posters above, I suggest checking in with your Department of Health. In VT where I live, the Dept of Health doesn't provide gyno services directly, but they can give you a referral to Planned Parenthood that will cover all the costs through a grant - no cost to you.

Another option is to go to a free anonymous HIV testing site. Most (if not all) community testing sites offer counseling and referrals along with the test. The tester should have more specific information about where you can get free or at least low cost gyno care.
