Hives

Not just a question for women, I just chose that category because it's most fitting as I'm a woman.

I suddenly broke out in terrible hives today - full body. No new detergent, no new foods (seriously racked my brains thinking on this, but nothing new), no new cosmetics or any other usual environment suspects. I just woke up, ate a bagel, went about my day and slowly over the course of a few hours developed terrible hives. There is just NO way I developed some kind of bagel-related allergy. We don't get gluten allergies in New York. We just don't. We need bagels.

I mean, I'm stressed out lately but not anymore so than usual. No pseudo-science, guys - I've got the internet to ya know, I've Googled this a bunch! Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience, how did you narrow down your search for the culprit? Can menstruation cause hives? I almost never get my period (very irregular) and woke up and got mine today, followed shortly by these hives. My theory - just knowing my body and whatnot - is that the stress of the period caused it. My menstrual cycles are rare but very intense and often quite painful and maybe this did it?

Thanks in advance! Damn, today was a shitty birthday! Sat around eating Benadryl and putting cold compresses on my swollen skin...

Maybe the menstrual protection you use? Might be a bad batch.

happy birthday!! but sorry it sucked if it happens again, i would arrange an allergy test with the dr.- lots of nasty shots, but they can help you figure out what's going on and what to do about it. it might be environmental if anything. and our bodies' allergies can change, even without warning. just pay attention to it, and if you have trouble breathing, go to the ER asap.

Stress can cause hives. My daughter gets them when she's really stressed out. If you have breathing problems or the get worse go to ER ASAP!

Thanks everyone! No trouble breathing, but my eyes are almost swollen shut and my WHOLE body is COVERED so that I'm pretty much just solid red at this point. No other symptoms so I'm trying to wait it out

That happened to me junior year of high school just woke up one morning covered my hives had hives seriously after 3 months of miserable pain because at that point they dont itch just hurt the dr found out I was severely allergic to mold and we found out there was a mold issue due to a leak between our apartment wall.

If your eyes are that swollen I really suggest you got to your dr or er now once the eyes get involved the next is usually the throat. Feel better

Maybe it is just the seasonal change. Or some insect bit you. I wouldnt jump to food allergy right away, I know you can get them from foods youve eaten forever all of the sudden because your body changes as you age. But Im betting its weather or a bite or something subtle.
Just drink water nonstop all day, see if itll help flush something out. Other than that Id say go to a doctor of it keeps up. But allergists are mighty expensive.

Happy Birthday Owl! What a crummy way to spend your birthday.

I have nothing useful to add about hives. Two types of candy give me hives. Pez gives my brother hives. That's all I know.

I wonder if there was something suspect in that particular batch of bagels.

Unfortunately I did have to go to ER because the hospital is the only place around here that will take my Medicaid. My eyes got rather bad and my throat started to swell as you predicted, so I had no choice. Can't really tough it out if ya can't breathe.

No obvious cause for them, says the medical professionals. Hives are sadly a very mysterious ailment that can occur and reoccur seemingly without provocation (or at least not any provocation that can be easily detected). I was told that some women do experience hives in conjunction with their period, so maybe this is just a new fun symptom to add to my PMS list!

Never speak ill of the bagels! Ever!

Definitely a crummy birthday, but luckily I don't really celebrate my birthday anyway. However, it would have been nice to just sit around eating junk food and watching movies...and not soaking in cool water to make the swelling go down. Oh well! Luckily it was nothing more serious than hives, gotta stay counting those blessings

I'm glad you went to the ER and hope you are feeling better now. I am very sorry that you have had to deal with this as I can empathize with severe hives I truly hope that this was a one time thing for you.
