Being the friend of many many females, I often get those phone calls or texts askind those "Am I normal?" questions about sex.

One of the questions I just got kind of threw me back because I don't know the answer and I haven't heard of it being a... well a problem.

The question is, is it normal to have an irregular, fast heartbeat after sex? I would love to answer her and say yes, since I am often out of breath after an intense session, but I've never had an actual irregular heartbeat to the point where it is painful or scary.

What is your input, EF?

I've personally never had a heartbeat that irregular after sex, either.

What she finds to be irregular, may not actually be irregular at all. If she's concerned or experiencing symptoms like dizziness, light-headedness or nausea afterwards then she should get it checked out.

Faster than normal heartbeat sounds normal, but irregular would concern me. Definitely something worth looking into further.

Does the same happen when she exercises?

my heart beats fast..but never irregular.I shake ,can barely walk and feel energized but yet exhausted at the same point if that makes sense!!

I have mitro-valve prolapse and sometimes my heartbeat can be irregular after a particularly aerobic session of sex. It's not life threatening but can feel scary. She should get her heart checked for peace of mind if she experiences it again.

Well for myself personally, I get that pounding heartbeat from the orgasm and I feel lightheaded and immediately energized. But what my friend is describing sounds like her heart is actually hurting. I told her to see the doctor but I know there's been a time or two when the pounding was so intense that it hurt a bit. I never saw it as a bad thing.

I would tell her to talk to her doctor. It could be a sign of something serious, or just be nothing. But I would lean toward the safe side and talk to a professional about it, if I was her. I have never had an irregular heart beat after any kind of work out.

I'm in agreement with everybody else who recommended she see a doctor if she's really nervous about it, if for no other reason than to err on the side of caution.

She needs to talk to her doctor. Being out of breath and having your heart rate higher than normal is fine. My Man's heart rate is easily over 110 right after he orgasms (nurse training, I can do heart rates in semi-sleep, with my head on his chest) but irregular heart rate needs to be checked out. She may not actually be having actual irregular heart beats, a lot of people have them and don't' know it, and most people who do have them don't realize it. But, a doctor can put her on a treadmill or just do a resting EKG to see if everything is OK.

There are even small EKG machines that can be taken home if it only happens after sex. My guess would be any heavy exercise would do it, if she's having irregular rhythms.

Depends. Usually I'm tired/exhausted. Sometimes I'm frustrated and if it was done right, I'm just the right level of sore that I get a reminder when I walk.

My boyfriend has laid on my chest a few times and made the comment that my heart sounds irregular after sex. I personally don't notice a difference. I've been to the doctor and been told all is well.
