IUD and masturbation

To branch off of Liz2's question, I've been holding out on getting an IUD because I've been worried about the string that hangs down. Has anyone had any issues with the string and sex or toy use?

Actually, no. I've had an IUD for the past three years. Once it gets settled in they usually trim the string a bit so it's not as noticeable, and I've never had any sexual partners tell me it's distracting. It also doesn't conflict with penetrative toys!

I recently got an IUD in december and my partner keeps getting scratches from it. I'm supposed to have a follow up so I guess I gotta ask if they can trim the strings some more. Other than that no problems with toys or any thing else. Just feeling sorry for him.

I've never heard of them trimming the strings AFTER insertion. Initial cutting is done before insertion.

My doctor has said that if the strings bothered my partner during intercourse he could cut them off when I revisited. He never trimmed them, they are the same length they were as when the doctor took the IUD out of its box.

The strings arent really long enough to get attached to a toy and keep it inside you if thats what you are worried about. You will never have that issue.

My partner rarely feels them. In the three years i've had my IUD he's had to make me stop piviting when I was ontop maybe two times bcs it was too intense for him, the rubbing of his tip on the strings.

Don't worry about the strings! They will not interfere with your toys.

I've had an IUD for about 18 months and only had an issue with the strings right at the beginning. They're sort of like fishing wire at first, but soften with time and eventually they're supposed to curl up around your cervix so they don't hang down at all. In fact, my partner started freaking out when he couldn't feel them because he was convinced it came out.

You have to be very careful that your practitioner doesn't cut the strings too short. With time, your IUD can migrate slightly higher in your uterus or the strings can retract. The LAST thing you want is to have to have it manually removed because the strings are too short.

Can't say the thought never occurred to me. But I have to go for a real hunt to find mine, they really have curled up and become quite unnoticable unless you sort of flick them up off the vaginal wall. So mine haven't been noticed during sex. I was a bit worried that a heavily textured matte toy might tug at it, but realistically if you are using adequate lube I don't really see it being a problem. I tend to use smooth and short toys more often anyway though. I haven't had mine for very long but haven't had any problems.

I recently got an IUD. The doctor said that it wouldn't be that big a deal if the strings did go in, but that it would just be harder to get it out when the time came. We are having issues with it currently, the string seems to be just barely sticking out and is like a pin prick on the end of his penis and it has made him a little on the weak side of erections more than a few times. I am worried that now we are going to have to cut it shorter and it will go up in for sure! I have an app. with the Dr. in a couple weeks, wish me luck:}

I've had an IUD for a year a half, and have never had any problem with sex or sex toys. My IUD is the best birth control decision I ever made! I love it.

The strings don't hang down outside your body like a tampon. You cant reach up inside yourself and remove your IUD. The strings soften over time and can't be felt. My gyno cut my strings very short, and most of the time anyway they curl up and wrap around the IUD device itself. You can have sex with an IUD, and you can play with toys with an IUD. It doesn't change anything.

The standard procedure is to not trim the string much before/after initial insertion, but at the one month follow up, the string is cut shortish so that it is not hanging noticeably down into the vaginal canal.

As for the query: neither of my two partners has ever mentioned being able to feel the string or has had an issue with it. It is true that initially the string is rather hard and stiff and that it softens with time.
