Period cups

Contributor: sweetpea12 sweetpea12
Instead of using pads or tampons, have you ever used a period cup? I don't know if that's the official name but it's a silicone cup that is placed in the vagina that catches all your menstrual blood.

I have the Moon Cup. It's silicone (because of course I had to have silicone). It was a little tricky at first, but I really like it. This is my 4th cycle with it and here are some pros and cons I've found personally

Pros
-No more buying tampons or pads which saves tons of money.
-No irritation from chemicals.
-No waste.
-Foreplay and certain sexual activities are easier without strings hanging out.
-No need to carry tampons or pads with you.
-Easy to clean.
-Comfortable.
-Very little leakage or scent.
-Less cramping.
-Safer than chemical ridden pads or tampons.

Cons
-Can be a pain in the ass to fold to put in and remove.
-Mine got crazily stuck one time because there was too much suction and it was too high so I had to actually dig it out with clamps (because I trimmed the stem)
-Gets a little messy sometimes.

Yeah, menstrual cups. There are several brands. Right now I'm interested in the MeLuna because they have several different stem types.

I'm planning on using my 50 million tampons before I buy one, though.

I have size large Lady Cups, but they seemed to be a bit too large for me, so they've been sitting in my bathroom drawer forever.

i have nerver heard of these. it sounds like there would be a mess trying to take it out. so lets see, a cone in your... and there it catches all blood. ?? really ??? i would think it would be painful or large. idk. i'll have to look into these. i hate having to use things that will be in the landfill when i'm dead and gone.

I use the DivaCup and I love it. Costs $30 and I can use it for 3 years instead of buying tampons every month. I can also use the cup for 12 hours without having to empty it, with no risk or worry of TSS.

I tried these but they didn't work for me. I know that my uterus is tilted, so maybe that has something to do with it. I really wish they DID work, given how many good things I've heard about them.

I have a moon cup and Im so glad i mad the switch. its really not that messy, about the same as a tampon. just dont YANK it out and you want get it anywhere.

Im still new to it so I havent used it to sleep in yet. Im a really heavy bleeder so im afraid itll still leak over night. On my heavy day I have to check or change it every hour or 2. normally i can go a LOT longer without even worrying about it.

Been using my DivaCup (also made of medical grade silicone) for a little while now and I absolutely LOVE it! I wish I had tried it a long time ago. I can actually forget I'm on my period when I use it.

If you want to read even more opinions and experiences with various menstrual cups, check out this link with a bunch of old discussions on the topic. Lots of good info there!

They are medical grade silicone belled cups. You fold them and insert them like you would a tampon. And it collects all the blood. Every so often you take it out dump the blood in the toilet give it a good rinse or wipe and reinsert. You can get them from amazon or a number of other stores. There are many brands so if you look around you can see which one you think might work for you.

I'm a tampax pearl girl! Maybe someday I'll try the cups but I have a LOT of tampons to use up first. I probably have like a 2 year supply it's crazy. I used to coupon a lot so I got them cheap

I love cups. I use a cup in combination with washable cloth pads. I HATE tampons, always have. Finding out cups existed seriously changed my life.

They sound like a good idea, but I'm just not sure about using them...

I'm interested but then again I'm afraid of spillage and wearing a liner wouldn't do a thing for that if it somehow became unstuck or whatever. I'm just too worried something would go wrong and I'd be out in public with an embarrassing mess.

I've always thought about it, but imagine it'd be even messier than tampons/pads are with how much I bleed. Not to mention finding one to fit me would be a challenge.

I have the Diva Cup and have also used Insteads, but with both I have leakage problems, especially when I'm lying down. I don't know if I'm getting the wrong angle or what.
