Shaving irritation - how can you prevent it?

Contributor: WD40watcher WD40watcher
I have been getting an irritation on my pubic mound lately after I shave where I break out. Does anyone else get this and have you found any ways to prevent it? I try to moisturize after I shower, but maybe this adds to the problem by clogging my pores.

both the wife and I use a thin coat of silicone lube (ID silicone lube is our favorite) before shaving with creams or gels. Seems to help as the lube provides a slick base to prevent nicks and irritation, it also prolongs blade life too. The wife also uses it as an after shower moisturizer, the molecular structure of silicone will not plug pores so it lets the skin breath too.

Be sure to let us know, I read it in a review a long time ago and would love to hear if others have similar results.

That is a concern for sure. We have a bath matte that helps. Although for me, I shave out of the shower, usually I sit on the toilet to shave down there.

the directions on mine says to have 1/4 inch of hair before you use it, I have never used it before though...

I don't know a whole lot but I do know you should let it grow out a few days...that way the wax has something to hold onto. That's what I've heard at least, I'm no expert by any means.

You should buy a travel-size "EPILATOR", similar results as waxing but with a lot less mess.

Exfoliating before can help. I read about allowing your skin to get wet/moist enough by the water before going at it. I really have had GREAT results with Coochy shave cream. If I slack off and things get more than stubbly I will put on Coochy then add a layer of non-scented, sensitive shave cream that I use on my legs over top of the Coochy.
I got razor burn too often under my arms and after the last incident I used Coochy and no burn!
Also, I was told that you should use an un-scented lotion on freshly shaved legs but I don't always do it because I love my smell good stuff!
Aloe can also be soothing to put on after shaving.
And one more suggestion, Coochy protection mist!

My biggest suggestion is to soak the area in warm water (whether in the shower or bath) for at least three minutes BEFORE shaving. This relaxes the skin. It will reduce razor burn. The longer the better. Then, if possible, let the shaving gel or whatever else you're using sit for a few minutes. This penetrates the hair and makes it easier to cut.

Shave the finest hair first, letting the coarser hair soak longer.

Try to go over each area with only ONE stroke. If you must go over again, apply more gel/cream/whatever you're using. If you miss a hair, I suggest using a pop-up trimmer or tweezers instead of a second stroke of the razor -- you're less likely to get razor bumps and irritation.

Hold the razor at about 30 degrees to the skin.

Avoid shaving right after you get up. Your skin will be swollen and puffy at first. 20-30 minutes later, your skin will be more taut, exposing more hair.

Rinse your razor after EVERY stroke. Any hair trapped on the blade will reduce the razor's effectiveness.

If you have to apply pressure with the blade, that means it's too dull and should be replaced.

For soothing afterwards, a cool damp towel does amazing. Try not to itch. Also, try not to wear tight underwear, as it can rub at the hairs and cause them to ingrow. Wearing boxer shorts or something right after shaving instead of panties can make a HUGE difference.

Around your vulva, only use minimal ingredient products. Some lubricants actually do amazingly well as a moisturizer, amazingly enough. And I know they're safe around my vulva!
