Did anyone talk to you/explain anything about sex toys?

Contributor: liilii080 liilii080
I learned a lot about sex (anatomy, diseases, etc.) from my Mom, a nurse; but in all the talks we ever had about sex she never once talked to me about toys and the role they can play in learning your body and what works for you. I plan to change that with my own kids but I was curious if anyone else had someone who introduced them to sex toys and how you felt about that.

I didn't learn anything about anything, until reading here.

I've learned so much.

I thought jelly was the best of the best kind of toys.
My mom never wanted to discuss sex with me, and all the other crap I learned was from romance novels.

I'm not big on advice - just like my golf - my sex 'game' is completely self-taught - trial-and-error. But like Illusional said = read everything you can, if you're buying a toy read all the reviews for the product your interested in and anything similar. I have a really good BS detector so I can tell when someone's blowing smoke.

I found my mom's toys. So that's how I learned. She caught me looking at them when I was about 15 and had to explain.

No. I am self taught.

I knew they existed thanks to something moderately cryptic, yet leading, that a teacher said about what they weren't allowed to teach us, but I never had the courage to actually buy any until many, many years later. I'm pretty sure many of my classmates headed to Spencer's straight after school that day, though.

I didn't get into them until my dad's gf got me my first one at 21. Before then I didn't even masturbate.

I learned more on my own, though.

I knew they existed... I just never got up the courage to physically go into a shop. Still in the discovery stage, but that is the fun of EF, when I have questions I have somewhere to go with them now!

I knew they existed, but no one specifically told me anything. Had to do all the research myself.

My mom made jokes about vibrators and stuff, so I knew what they were. Other than that, I found out about sex toys on my own.

The very basic yes. But everything else I taught myself.

I never had anyone tell me about sex toys. I had to learn on my own and experiment.

My mom never discussed anything about sex with me. Everything I have learned about toys I have learned here on this site and reading the reviews.

I knew they existed and not much else. I had no clue about materials and variety.

Since the schools i attended as a youngster preached abstinence, my only sex ed was bits & pieces from my Mom usually followed by "don't get pregnant." I've learned a lot the last few years from my own research mainly.

Nobody ever talked to me about anything, so I went out on my own to figure it out.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one who has had to investigate this stuff on my own. I think it's sad that there's not more talk about it though since toys can be a part of having a healthy, satisfying sex life and are a great way to figure out what you like and how you work. Keep the responses coming!

Honestly - isn't this the kind of thing you need to learn on your own? Are any of expecting sex toys 101 to be taught in local high schools or colleges? I think not - I sure don't want my tax dollars going into this kind of person choice.

Likewise - is anyone expecting mom or dad to sit down and say 'now here's a rabbit vibe - you stick it here - rotate this and vibe that' - NOT!

This is what self exploration is all about. Unlike prior generations the whole world is available at the click of a few buttons! Because of the WWW, there are no excuses for not not knowing - anything that you are interested in finding out.

Is everything on the web correct? Obviously not, that's why we can go to multiple sources, read conflicting information and judge for ourselves!

I definitely think you need to learn about it on your own but in my opinion I would have liked some info from the people I trust. No demo necessary, just straight talk.

I understand the concept - I just can't imagine what I would actually say to my son or daughter. I'm 98% sure they would flee the room screaming!

Yes, I find myself wondering that too! I don't have kids yet but want them and would like to be able to give them a great, open place to discuss and learn sexual well being including toys, but, how do you get there without you or them getting squirmy? Luckily, I have some time to work that out.

I don't remember where I learned about toys, I knew such things existed and shopped online at spencer's where I discovered that there were different types. I think I lucked out finding EF by making a search on google when I was tring to find a good store to buy toys from.
As for anyone talking to me about it; I never got "the Talk" I had access to a book on human biology/anatomy (age appropriate) that gave a pretty reasonable description of intercourse and masturbation in addition to information on puberty.

the only thing I learned was through trial and error, and all the horror stories they teach in school, except for one occasion. I was about 15 when I got my first toy, a simple el-cheapo vibe. my best friend's mother got it for me. after that I had an incredible interest in toys.

I was almost entirely on my own, but I did attend a sex toy party once which gave me some more toy ideas.
It didn't help that I live in an area almost totally devoid of adult stores.
