In order to be safe AND make him feel more comfortable about the whole thing, establish a "safe sound/gesture" (normally, it'd be a safe word, but breath play tends to interfere with talking). Hold a ball or handkerchief and let him know that if you drop it, that means you want to stop. That way, you know that things won't accidentally go wrong and he doesn't have to worry that he'll hurt you while you're not as able to communicate.
