You should start by reading some comments made by other contributors who have asked similar questions. Go to FORUM section and look for a category called Everday Sex and look for a section called Anal Sex. Click on any of 577 threads that were started and get a feel for the Pros or Cons and any other information that would help you better. I have provided a direct link here as follows, ANAL SEX.

Definitely start out using fingers and rimming before you move onto probes, plugs, beads, etc. Also, remember that anything you put in your ass, should not go in your pussy until it has been thoroughly cleaned.

Start with lubed fingers on the outside of the anus. I'd say skip rimming until you know both of you are comfortable with that - I class that as a much more advanced activity. Once you're comfortable with external play and enjoy the sensations then try inserting a finger.
Once you're done with that decide if you like more active play (thrusting) or prefer to just have something in there. If you like active play go for a silcone dildo or probe, for passive play get a plug (silicone, glass or metal).
