Erotica: Responsibility of the Author?

Contributor: Persephone's Addiction Persephone's Addiction
I read a lot of erotica, and I notice that the authors will throw in in a bit of realism in the form of "safety measures" - like mentioning condoms, or cleaning a toy. But, I've realized that when it comes to anal sex, they leave out lube. Is lube somehow unsexy? Are these authors just imagining what anal sex is, without experiencing? Do these authors realize what happens when you don't use lube?! I'm sorry, but I don't think a sore bum is sexy.
I just read a story last night where a girl is introduced to anal sex via a giant dildo - and while the author mentions a condom she put on the carrot she used moments ago, there is no mention of lube for the giant dildo. All I could think is, "Puh-lease. That is SO not gonna work."
Maybe I'm just a stickler for lube-realism....

GOOD POINT!

In the erotica I've read I don't think I've ever seen mention of lube. When it comes to enjoyment of sex, lube is a MUST.

Maybe they're worried about product placement?

If realism is an important element in the style of a particular author, then perhaps this is an oversight that takes away from the quality of their work, but on the other hand, erotica is one of the few places where you can enjoy sexual expression without having to worry about things like safety precautions or realism.

Fiction from all genres is rife with dangerous situations, lack of safety and plain-old-made-up-thin gs that don't exist. I don't think any author is obligated to present a realistic scenario for any sexual situation they choose to write about.

I don't think that any author is obligated to include anything. It was a facetious complaint.

I'm pretty lenient when it comes to erotica. As long as it gets me hot and bothered, I'm all good! Safe sex and all the things that go along with it pretty much take a backseat to my libido because I am 100% sure that this is fiction and no one is actually getting hurt. BUT--when there is complete lack of preparation prior to any anal action, I'm completely turned off. I can't help it. I'm thinking "hey! that would HURT" and the thought of that kind of pain does not turn me on.

I have actually used lube in most of the anal scenes I've written, but often little details (like lube) get left out to keep the pace of the story moving forward or to concentrate on other matters deemed more important.

Usually it's more about the writing and the story versus the realistic details, though it's never good if the reader is pulled out of the story cause of a small detail that can be easily incorporated.

I don't mention lube in the stories I write either, because I want my writing to take you away from the details of everyday. It is important that you get wrapped up in the moment as part of the arrousal. If I was writing a non fiction story about sex or foreplay I would definately write the safe details, but Erotica isn't a manual for me, it is all about writing to arouse the brain.

Nothing is sexier than a lube injector!
