Do You Have Collector Cravings?

Contributor: Kynky Kytty Kynky Kytty
This may be a little strange, but I was wondering if I was alone in having collecting tendencies and not just about just having a collection of sex toys. I mean in a psychological collecting way, like having that rush of 'I want it' for a particular item, and yet not totally feel satisfied when you get it. You always want more. I have been trying to control and usually set limits about what I decide to buy and I've respected them.

I've had many collections in my life. When I was a kid, I collected foreign coins, stickers, artisanal soaps. It was nothing really serious, but kept everything about those lines that I could find. When I was older, I started a collection of Fantasy books, PS1 and PS2 RPG games (I got a few cool ones). I would spend so much time looking at books and games on Ebay trying to get some specific books. At least I was only buying through deals.
Eventually, I was even collecting stuff through some online games, and I had to quit everything.

And now, well, I seem to have focused my attention on sex toys. That was even before I found Edenfantasys, and somehow I did not really follow my own rules of just 'those toys'. Isn't it convenient not to be able to say no when you're getting it free even if it's feeding a collecting issue?

So, my question is:
Do you collect stuff as well?
If so, what did you collect? And do you have to set yourself or your collection limits?

I'm sure we can all relate to this because this is exactly how consumerism/capitalism /advertising works. A need is artificially created. A product is offered as a method of fulfilling that need. You sense this "lack" and then do your best to meet this false lack. Seeing as the need didn't really exist to begin with, and you didn't really achieve that abstract notion of completeness that you hoped to achieve, you're left feeling empty. Until another product comes along and you're convinced that you need that one too.

After a while we kind of compulsively start to fill holes in our lives with stuff, it's just a knee-jerk sort of thing. I'm not anti-material; I consume plenty of stuff on a daily basis. I just have to note that this is sort of how capitalism functions.

Where to start. Let's see....shoes, handbags, cardigans, tees, makeup especially lipsticks and eye shadows, nail polish, music, books, sex toys, jewelry (the real stuff, not costume), lingerie, bath and body products. And I'm sure there's more but I can't think of any right now.

What Sex, Lies & Pre-Law said is correct. That is how it all works.

However, I am a cheap man, I'll admit it. I do not buy things unless I have the money and can afford them, and I generally will not buy things if I can find something for less of a similar build and quality. I also will not buy things that I do not need. Do I need a new car? No. Do I need a bigger apartment or house? No. Do I need to get that $80 silk tie in Armani Exchange? ...no. Even if I'd love to, and even if I want to, if I cannot afford it, then I will not.

The same goes for my adult toys. Now, I do not collect sex toys - the things that I collect, and love collecting, are BDSM products. My favorites are riding crops, canes, cuffs, and collars. I could buy an entire house filled, but if something comes out that strikes me as different or interesting, I will want to buy it. I do, however, have restraint on myself of course, and the same goes for those things. My limit? When I do make my own dungeon, and there is no more space on the walls for me to hang things, then that is my limit. Aside from that, there are none, at all.

Another thing that I love collecting that goes along with fetishes are ruffly panties. I just love them, they are so cute. I love stroking them and rubbing them on my face and nose. I do not know why...they just feel nice, especially if they're silk. My last partner, I loved buying her little ruffled panties. There's one pair that I have in my closet of hers, and I love to just nuzzle them because they are 100% silk, and the ruffles are just so smooth. If I could just have a closet full of ruffled panties, I would die. Cream colored, white, black, pink, polka-dotted..mm... I also love bows. Like little hair ribbons and clips. So cute. (That's sort of like collecting, right?)

What else do I collect..hm...no, that's basically it. In terms of BDSM things though, I do enjoy to buy old riding crops and canes, like from the 1800s. Real, REAL collectors' items. Pretty cool.

When I was young, my family started a spoon collection for me. I always hated it, because I was the one who got to polish what evolved into hundreds of spoons.

Christmas Ornaments - another collection my family sort of started for me against my will. I have enough ornaments for 3 trees... and I hate decorating for Christmas.

Finally, books... which really are the one collection *I* want. I always want to buy more, I've got a stack of 6 or 8 to read right now but that doesn't stop me from wanting to go to the bookstore and come home with a dozen more.

Candles are another thing I tend to end up collecting, but really its just a compulsive purchase problem. I do try to impose an embargo on myself when it gets out of hand...making myself burn what I've got before I buy more.

Oh..and Muffy? (Beware: shameless plug) If you like autographed books...ya need to get going on your Twitterotica. We are giving autographed books as prizes!

I love all these things also, and as Laurel stated books and candles as well. I am recently addicted to this site and am in the proccess of becoming a sex toy/product junkie. I love to write so being in the review program is really fun for me, and I just want to get more stuff just so I *can* write more! I also enjoy collecting pandas, buddhas and dragons, I absolutely love the Asian/Zen themes. Oh and bedtime bears lol.

I'll have to get on that Twitterotica! I'm such a perfectionist though when it comes to my creative writing, that I probably wouldn't produce something I was satisfied with until the contest ended. I will definitely try though

I'm right there with you when it comes to books. I kind of have a little bit of a book collecting obsession. I have three book cases in my room at home and one at school all full of books. One of them is books I haven't even read yet! If I have it my way I'll have a room like Bell's library in Beauty and the Beast with the walls full of books and the latters with wheels.

I'm also a fan of older books. I love used bookstores. I have to plead with my boyfriend to stop into little bookstores when were traveling, because he knows I completely lose track of time. I think that a lot of older books have more character than newer books. Plus, these days when it comes to book design a lot of publishers would rather go cheap than produce a higher quality product. I've started collecting the Leatherbound classics series by Barnes & Noble which are absolutely gorgeous and I recommend to anyone who loves the classics. Wow, I kind of went on a little book related rant there, huh?

I also collect coins, because my grandfather started a collection when he was about 18 years old and he used to tell me the history behind each piece, and we would work on it together. When he died he passed it onto me and I've continued adding to it myself.

I have such a bad case of collecteritis that I have to limit myself by price sometimes...I will buy cheap crap just because I can get LOTS of it. Now I weigh the possibility that I'll actually USE a product against the joy of opening a really BIG box of stuff. It seems to be working so far...

oh yeah...I'm a collector personality type. Foreign (non-American) money, M:tG cards, comics, action figures/toys, gaming stuffs (RPG books), cd's, dvd's, regular books...it goes on (not too much further).

My thing though, I get into it for a few weeks to a few months and then it fizzles out on me and I end up getting rid of most of the collection (except for the valuable parts). I may come back to the collection in a while...or not. The only consistent collection is the foreign money collection, except the bicentennial quarters.

I like hoarding In addition to sex toys I collect money from other countries, magazines, games and gaming paraphernalia (and consoles, electronics/gadgets in general, books, and dvds.

Oh.. and I have a writing fetish so anything to do with it like paper, pens, pencils I hoard like a crazy person lol I have stacks and stacks of stationary and boxes of pens.

Hello. My name is Lily, and I... have a hoarding/collecting problem.

I've collected stuff all my life, and I'm a terrible pack rat. The collections that have remained constant are the minerals and the dragons. I don't count books... that's feeding my hardcore bibliophile. That's preserving culture! That's a service to humanity! Or something like that...

Sex toys and such as definitely become an addiction. We're not going to talk about the amount of time I spend on an average day, wandering sex toy sites and forums, chatting or lurking on my reviewer Twitter, etc. And it's not because getting one doesn't satisfy me. It's the "drug" of finding a community where I don't have to censor myself. I keep coming back because being appreciated and understood even when people know about the toys is hard to find, even on my liberal college campus. Hell, I'm looked at as a novelty, I'm often god damn fetishized and turned into a sex object in people's minds the instant they know. Ignore the fact that I'm a smart researcher, that I'm a musician, that I'm an artist, that I want to go to med school to help people, that I am a whole person. With most college students, the instant they find out, they either pigeonhole me into the "way out there deviants" category (in a good way or a bad way), or they turn me into a sex-crazed nympho with loose morals who wants nothing more than to share those toys and my expertise first hand with anyone who asks.

Is it any wonder that I keep coming back here, and don't tell many people? But I've gotten off topic. Yeah, I have a collecting problem.

I'm actually kind of crazy when it comes to holding onto things that I've created. School notebooks where I've doodled in the margins and written little poems in the back, envelopes I've drawn mushrooms on, ornaments I made in grade school, not to mention the oodles and oodles of files I have to move every time I get a new computer, because I refuse to let go of even the most rudimentary MS Paint doodles. I'm still sad because there's a story I wrote in first grade that is probably lost forever.

As for things that I can buy, though? I crave beautiful textures. Corsets with satin and lace, cushy pashminas that I could cuddle up in all day, furs that give off that warm sunshine scent... Fortunately, I was raised super-frugally, so for the most part I can stop myself from wasting a lot of money by asking myself "Do I really need this? Does this have any practical application?" I give into the craving approximately once or twice a year to buy something nice that I can just put on my lap and stroke all day.

P.S.: I don't support the killing of animals for the sole purpose of their fur, but if the rest of it wasn't wasted and it was killed in a humane way, I'm not against having an article of clothing made from that fur.

I love textures, too. Silk is nice, so is satin. I also love lace, like you. You know what texture I really love? Rabbit's fur. So nice and smooth. And I agree to use the entire animal if it's going to be eaten anyway - makes more use of it than disposing of something valuable.

I collect pint glasses. My nicest ones so far are my Guinness 200th anniversary ones; they came in a set of two. The next ones on my wish list are the Sam Adams 25th anniversary ones; they come in a set of four and are the special patented Sam Adams style. I don't have my entire collection with me so I can't count them, but I know I have at least 15 different ones. That's from collecting for a little over a year. Most of them were free from promos at bars (a couple bars in my area have promos very regularly).

Currently I collect:

-- makeup, HARDCORE, although I hit pan surprisingly often!
-- I've started collecting perfume samples.
-- coins
-- scarves (head scarves, not so much the neck ones)
-- Asian films and antiques

And of course, stuff with certain patterns on them.

Mostly I enjoy collecting things I start having. Such as book series. I like having all the books in the series to make it complete. DVD series. Once I get season 1, if I enjoy it I have to get the rest to complete it. As for games, More for personal preference I want to collect all the Castlevania series. I only collect games I played in my childhood that I may be missing for the console. Oh yes, and Alice in Wonderland things.

I'm such a packrat. My fiance is helping me go through and get rid of things I know I don't need, and will never use again, yet for some reason I still have. This is mostly clothing.

Also, lotion. I have an insane amount of lotion everywhere. Bath and Body Works had a sale last month that I should have avoided because it was for anything in their 'signature collection' buy 2 get 1 or buy 3 get 2. So I left with 5 new lotions. On top of the 10 already in my bathroom and the other 4 or so floating around the bedroom, lol

I collect medeival dragons mainly (as in figurines, wallhangings, etc). I've done it for years so have actually got a "dragon room" of sorts now. I'm still collecting, to the extent that I'm lusting after the BadDragon Anthro Dragoness stroker right now even though I personally don't have the anatomy to use it. I've got lesser collections too (Steven King books and rocks for example) but nothing that I'm as conscious about as the dragon collection.

Alan doesn't collect much besides DVD movies. I'd say he's pretty hardcore about it because even if there's nothing he particularly wants to see, he still wants to buy one on a regular basis.

I'm a hoarder and a packrat too.

My big collections are shoes, books (thousands of them), and Star Trek paraphernalia. I have been to a few Cons, with my poor husband who had to drag me kicking and screaming out of the dealers rooms and auctions while I bought everything Trek in sight .

I have an insane amount of porn too, although I don't collect that on purpose.

My mom has every Stephen King book in print so far. I love From A Buick 8. And I love dragons and glass flowers, but unfortunately don't have anywhere to keep them really right now, so I'm holding off on collecting any more

I collect, and I almost hoard. I use what I like, and give away, sell or otherwise remove what I don't like from my collection.

I tend to buy everything on sale, or otherwise cheap as I can get em' but only buy nice high-quality things that will last (supposedly) forever. I've got tantus and vixen creations on my list right now, but I've slowed down a lot since I bit the bullet and spent a pretty penny on a luxury dildo (the O2 revolution Niagara)

however I also collect other stuff, capitalism! *shakes fist*
now I just buy everything else at thrift stores (example: clothes)

I'm a sentimental packrat - things from my past I keep. Hundreds of written-in notebooks that will never be seen by another living soul, old show programs and posters from drama, stuff like that. I cried when I had to edit my life when I moved into a smaller place (then was evicted six weeks later due to the dog and husband).

My main collections are tea cups and their saucers, and Holly Hobbie items. I was thrilled when I found an old masonboard(?) Holly Hobbie toychest at an antique store for $15 - all the children's books I managed to keep from my childhood are in it.

Although ... I collect mail order catalogues. I look through and imagine buying and living with the things I see because I could never afford anything.

Adult toys ... there's only a few I'd want, my collection comprises of only three.

Oh, where to begin as I sit in my office, rather mini-scrapbook shop full of supplies I have hoarded over the years. I like make-up too. And last year I successfully tossed about half of the ineffective sex toys I owned, hoping to one day find all the right ones! So I joined here to find out what others loved the most and hopefully I can make some informed decisions based on that.

I'm just a sex-toy collector! My wife keeps reminding me that can't possibly use 1/10th of the ones we have and I keep buying more! Wish I could gift them instead of throwing them away - some are very high quality glass and other toys!
