Question about sterilization and the Pure Wand

Contributor: SexyTabby SexyTabby
Well I received my Pure Wand today and I did buy it on ebay. It was listed as new but had a damaged box. It wasn't sealed but appears to be new with no marks, damages or anything to it - the box is beat to hell though. But for 69 bucks I figured I could safely sterilize it and go buy it a new box.

I wanted to ensure all the proper ways to clean and sterilize the thing before we use it. I read all the threads on here about alcohol, boiling and all that. Since the kids were home and we had company I decided to just put it in the closet and wait til they went to bed and probably try it out tomorrow night.

Well while I was in the shower the powers that be, otherwise known as hubby, decided he wanted to check it out tonight. Unfortunately...he threw it in the dishwasher with all my dirty dishes I don't know wtf he was thinking. Not to mention I was in the shower when he turned it on so on top of that he gave me a wonderful C-O-L-D shower!

So my question is what concerns should I have with my darn dishes and the pure wand? It appeared to be new but if it had any germs of any kind on it would the heavy pot cycle and sanitize cycle of the dishwasher keep my dishes safe? By the time he told me what he did the dishwasher was drying.

And here I was letting him off the hook for the cold shower thinking he was being sweet and helping me out

If there were any bad pathogens on the Pure Wand then no, it is highly unlikely that the Pot and Sanitize cycle of the dishwasher would guarantee their removal or inactivation. If it were so easy then hospitals and doctor's offices would just have a few dishwashers .

That said, if the Pure Wand showed no indications of having any residue on it and if you were to run the dishwasher again it is unlikely that any pathogens from the Pure Wand would be present in sufficient quantity to cause problems in any non-immunocompromised person. If you wanted to be really sure you could fill your sink up with 10% bleach water (cold water, because it causes less of the bleach to evaporate out) and soak the plates for a while. I'm not sure on running some bleach through your dishwasher. The good news is that most STI pathogens do not thrive outside the human body, so the pathogens in your dishwasher are much more likely to be of the common kitchen/bathroom type.

Yeah I was thinking along those lines, hubby ended up doing dishes mumbling all the way (you can see it was new!) lol I did help mainly to make sure it was done right

At least it didn't kill his desire to play with the pure wand later.

The Pure Wand doesn't come sealed inside its box or anything, it's just sitting there on the satin, even if the box is not damaged. I'd wipe it down with a bleach solution, because it's new and you don't know who has touched it, and now it has touched food particles, but the reason stainless steel is used in kitchens is because it can be sanitized with bleach solution.

Relax! The Pure Wand is the highest grade Stainless Steel. I doubt that there was any contamination on it when it arrived - but off course better safe than sorry. Just a quick wash with anti-bacterial soap - or alcohol - or bleach would be fine.

The dishwasher would be my last choice. Dish washing detergents are horribly caustic (the opposite of acidic) and I'd be afraid of dulling the finish.

I'm not sure why people are so phobic about this stuff - if you had any idea how many billion microbes inhabit various parts of your anatomy - you never touch yourself! The truth is unless you have a compromised immune system your body is quite capable of fighting off the various microbes that attack you all day - everyday.

But again - prudence calls for the occasional alcohol wipe and rinse with hot water.

BTW - enjoy your Pure Wand, my wife just absolutely loves hers! I get a big kick out of making her squirt with it - and even take the small end anally - give the old man a thrill some day!

Your dishes should be fine hun just don't use the wand if it was washed in the dishwasher with dish detergent. Boil the wand for ten minutes to remove any residual detergent then wash it with a mild soap. Alternatively you could wash it with Dawn dishsoap which will break down any residual oils and then boil your wand for ten minutes.

I would wash your dishes in some good dishsoap and hot water and then run them back through the dishwasher without soap. That should sanitize them properly if you are really concerned. Most nasty viruses tht could be infecting the metal of the wand would be easily killed in a dishwasher. Metal is nonporous so it should have much of anything growing on it to begin with. Even in food service we are concerned about pathogens being passed through touch contamination not through the dishwater.

Thanks for your advice everyone. Once everything was said, done and properly cleaned the pure wand is an interesting lil toy. Not that it could be considered lil the thing weighs a ton! I think it's one of those toys that takes lots of fun filled practice
