Suggestions for common, affordable, "non-snobby" toys to try.

Contributor: ToyGeek ToyGeek
It's come to my attention that I'm something of a spoiled snob with a toybox full of Lelo and JimmyJane and pure silicone, so in the interest of broadening my experiences before writing a blog post I have in mind, I am thinking that I need a selection of affordable toys to review.

So, what are the under $40 toys folks would recommend as the sorts of toys that everyone should experience in order to become fully versed in the realm of toys?

The handful of less expensive toys I have used include a Doc Johnson gift set (a pocket rocket, slimline velvet cote vibe, and a bullet); a Nasstoys Pretty Pleaser (a jelly rabbit with rotating beads); the California Exotics Triple Luxe; and the less expensive items I have reviewed on EF, like the Lucid Dream, the California Exotics Clit Pump, and the Rabbit Dancer.

This is not about the toys I would like -- this is about the toys that "everyone" has allegedly experienced. My plan is to pick a few in order to better educate myself, evaluate my biases, and thus de-snobify my writing. However, if there are certain toys that are simply so amazing you think they'll overwhelm my ability to be snobby about jelly, by all means bring them on!

Thanks!

Not all cheap toys have to be jelly.

My favorite (and one that has tons of reviews, so it seems to be a common one) is the Doc Johnson Velvet:

I have heard absolutely amazing things from respected, experienced reviewers about this:

Well, if you're not looking for something that you'd think you'd like I think trying out cheaper toys is just going to intensify the "snobbiness" that you think you have. There are however a lot of awesome toys out there under $40.00, but I would just say to look for something that you like in that price range, not what everyone else would like. Otherwise I don't see how the experiment would work.

You can also get good quality toys under $40.00, you don't have to choose jelly. You can try some glass pieces, there is the Bent Graduate which a lot of people love for G-spotting. There's also the hard plastic evolved vibes which I personally enjoy quite a bit. Basically, if you don't like jelly..don't get jelly. It's not going to make you more well rounded to try it. You've already tried it so you know what the material is like. Jelly is something a lot of people stay away from anyway.

Try some bullets, many of those are under $40...way under. Look through the toys available and just narrow your search to under $40. Then look through, see what is highly rated and check out some reviews.

Yep, that's the vibe that came in the gift set I mentioned. I only used it once -- perhaps I should play around with it a bit more and review it.

Oops, I forgot that I actually have the X-treme pack -- it's the one I found too noisy and took apart in the name of science. I remember looking at that blue plastic vibe way back when and shying away from the noise level, but I could give that one a go, and the Bent Graduate looks very promising. I have a less expensive glass toy from Topco that's still one of my favorites, so I guess I'm not a complete snob.

Excellent points, thanks. I'll go see if I can build a wish list with nothing but toys under $40.

I have Ella and a bullet almost identical to the BNaughty, although I've added it to the potential list. The last one though -- I wouldn't touch the vamp with a long stick, it gives me the complete creeps, sorry.

Anyway, I've figured out that I have more in the under $40 range than I thought, so if I add a couple to my next order, I can probably write the kind of article I want to write without ending up with only high-end examples after all.

Thanks everyone!

(I'll still take suggestions, but for now, I'm off to bed.)

I really like Evolved, their vibrations range from low to high, which is great for beginners. And they're made of soft, smooth plastic!

There are plenty of silicone (or even glass) toys available for under $40, so there's no need to put nice toys in the "snobby" class.

Sadly there aren't so many vibrators there yet.
