Lights Out!

This mask is great for reducing someone's sight quickly without having to bother with knots, buckles, or snaps. It is especially convenient if the wearer has long hair. People with especially large (or small) heads or those who want total darkness guaranteed will want to look elsewhere. If treated well this mask could last a good long while, but don't expect it to last forever.

With blindfolds, sometimes less is more. I normally just use dark bandanas, but since long hair can get tangled in knots (or buckles and snaps), elastic turns out to be a quick and easy way to achieve the desired effect.

The mask arrives in a cardboard/plastic package that is proportionally sized but not suited for storage. It has a leather looking material on the front side with a velvety inside layer. The "leather" is thin and has no smell, which is to be expected at this price point. The grain is fine and uniform enough that I suspect it is fake. With a product like this, fake leather isn't that big of a deal as long as it functions and looks the part. It has a simple, clean look that fits virtually any aesthetic. The velvety inside layer is soft against the face and a really nice alternative to fake fur on other masks, although it does attract lint. The whole thing is flexible, lightweight, and doesn't put any pressure on the eyes themselves. It has a length of 7.25" and a width of 2.5" with an indent in the middle that fits around the nose quite comfortably.

The elastic band is approximately 12.5" long unstretched and 1/4" wide. I generally wear hats that are men's size small and it fits me very comfortably, not to tight or loose and no slippage. It also fits well on someone who generally wears hats that are women's size medium. With a bit of sewing it could be modified to fit just about anyone, if you wanted to go to the trouble. In terms of comparing this mask to a head harness, the band is a two point connection and would be more stable if it had three or four points (a second elastic band, a strap around the top of the head, etc) to keep it fixed and stable around the head. The mask is unlikely to slip on a person who is staying still, in heavy bondage perhaps, but a head harness is better if you want to blind someone over the course of vigorous movement. This mask is ideal if the wearer is going to be laying down because one elastic band won't irritate the back of the head the way a buckle or other attachment might.

One thing I love about this mask is that there is no need to ask "can you see through that?". However, the true effectiveness of sight deprivation will depend on the shape of the wearer's face and the light in the room. When wearing it in a well lit room, it could be possible to see slivers through the edges, which is a plus if you want the wearer to walk from place to place. In order to achieve total darkness for serious sensory deprivation, you will need to be in a room that is already pretty low on light. If you want a total blackout every time regardless of the lighting, this is not the mask for you.

Elastic will wear out eventually and this mask won't be around forever, but it could last a good long while, depending on how far you stretch it and how rough you get with it. At this price replacing it wouldn't be painful.

It will easily fold into a small space for travel and could be mistaken as a sleep mask. For spot cleaning I would use antibacterial soap. If you believe it's real leather, you can use glycerin saddle soap to clean the front. Regardless, avoid submerging the mask in water. If it does get really wet, let it dry flat to maintain it's shape. If it gets really gnarly I will probably just toss it.

I would highly recommend this mask for wearers with long hair and people who want a blindfold that is both effective and convenient. If the wearer has a very large or small head, I would look for something that buckles or ties to fit instead.
Follow-up commentary
This mask is holding up suprisingly well. The band has stretched a bit, but it's still very functional. It's great not to have to worry about buckles or knots when trying to blind someone, at least while the elastic lasts.
